Linux kernel goes full AI slop code, hides chatbot commits

‘The kernel project only wants serious developers. That includes having access to enough resources to function in this world’

@spitfire @McCovican What we need is a fork.
New Linux and Slop Linux need to be developed separately.

That's a very appropriate thumbnail.

The good news is I have been putting in ten hour writing days, and this weekend or Monday is a realistic publishing date. Upon publishing, all backers will receive their eBooks.

The bad news is I'm going to have to tell my landlord that I'm late paying rent yet again. I got to show her that I will be doing a book Kickstarter ASAP after this current campaign is fulfilled.

Just a few days left to late pledge.

Please share! 🎉

jesus christ, Linux has had a 100% LLM takeover.

this project is completely cooked.

even after the AI bubble pop, it's not clear how to recover from this level of bullshit from this level of bullshitter.

https://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/1099594/be20382b54a9b4cd/

> Linus Torvalds believes that blaming LLMs for the kernel community's problems is wrong, when the problem is LLM users who do not understand how to use them or how the kernel works. A properly trained LLM is a useful tool, but it takes a lot of time to reach that point.
> Torvalds and others repeatedly said low-quality contributions from new developers should receive low priority, and that the community should stop trying to make contribution easy. Many developers said, repeatedly, that trying to mentor those developers is almost always a waste of time; they do not listen.
> There is some concern about companies maintaining private kernels with LLM help, but there does not seem to be much to be done about it.
> Kernel developers should not be required to use LLMs to work in the community, but those who do need to have enough resources available to generate acceptable results.
The requirement to add Assisted-by tags to patches created with LLMs will be removed, but maintainers still want to know about how a patch was created.

so how's it going already?

> The development community is struggling to keep up with the flood of security patches, and will continue to for some time. Some of the most urgent fixes may bypass maintainers and go straight to Torvalds. Maintainers were cautioned against telling their employers about vulnerabilities before public disclosure happens.

Really, I'm not out to suck as much ass as Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.

No sorry I don't know these people I have never heard of this "Linux" you must have misread my resume I have been working with linoleum since 1997. Yes, open flooring.

*(looks around awkwardly)*

(humor misfire in an attempt to distract myself from how wildly disappointed I am in the shape of FOSS today vs when broke me got into it because it was cheaper than a Visual Studio or Borland license)

My comrade @kimcrawley is about to publish her next work, go check out her kickstarter and be one of the first to get/read/talk about when it hits. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kimcrawley/recovering-after-gen-ai

How much slop is in Linux now? Ehh we decided not to tell you

https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20261009083137.3-1-sashal@kernel.org/

Trans women are important pioneers in tech. Danielle Berry, Lynn Conway, Sophie Wilson...

Louis is showing his true fascism adjacent colours here. He was also an antimasker (for Covid) back when ignoring the current and ongoing Covid pandemic wasn't popular!

These things go together. Transphobia. Spreading Covid. Shitting on the women who built a lot of crucial tech...

(Start wearing a respirator mask now if you stopped. #Covid is everywhere and causes brain damage.)

The Linux kernel is going to remove the requirement to disclose that "AI" was used for a contribution. Apparently, this was decided at the Linux Maintainers Summit, away from the LKML. No open discussion.

What a clown show.

Dating apps are a sad necessity (for many) and undoubtedly bad for mental health simultaneously. But this is definitely a reason for me to get rid of this particular one.

I'm shocked! (Not at all, actually.)

@baldur That's Cory Doctorow. I want to warn people that he loves being seen as an "AI critic" but he loves his LLM for typo checking! 🙃🙃🙃

“AI” boosters calling themselves “AI critics” or claiming to be critical of the technology seems to be such a common thing to do.

No doubt they believe it themselves, but what’s worrying is that so many people concerned about the tech then accept their position unexamined and assume anything more critical is unfounded extremism

It’s frustrating to watch so many fall for this

and having that label get widely accepted as true

More and more sites are having to set up defenses from AI bots. It is costly to provide online services and they were not built for bots.

One can say that the AI companies are performing a global denial of service attack, which incurs costs to all of their competitors, as well as the rest of the Internet, while their own services can afford to withstand that load. The service owners are forced to perform costly operations to defend them selves, but also make the services worse for the users.

This is anti-competitive.

@jon + pollution from scraping and from countermeasures

https://www.toxsec.com/p/ai-tar-pits-are-drowning-llm-scrapers

@jon AI bots waste *so* much moderator and admin time¹.

Applications to our instance these days are *almost all* from AI posing as people, and many of our reports are about these shitty accounts on other instances.

¹ not asking for mod help, just for someone to nuke these bots from orbit
