@MLE_online asked for more garden-related posts so here's my contribution. We found a fairly large sweet potato tuber lurking in a bed that had been planted with rooted slips from a batch of greens bought at a local Asian grocery and gave it a chance to sprout in a pot of pearlite under some bright LED lights. No idea if the potato is tasty but we know the greens are good so this will propagate some more.

The dspod_stampp4 project is fully fleshed out and has been posted to Github here:
https://github.com/emeb/dspod/tree/main/dspod_stampp4
You can find hardware and firmware details at that site.
Overall, I don't think that the ESP32P4 provides significant improvement over the ESP32S3 for audio DSP applications - the faster CPU clock rate is not a huge advantage and the other multimedia interfaces and coprocessors were not useful in my application. It's fun to try, but not a significant leap ahead.
Notes from the bench: got all the dspod interfaces working and the primary audio effects application is working. Porting to ESP32P4 *and* upgrading to ESP-IDF V6.x required some changes to the way I handle the audio and CV DMA, but that's done and things are working.

Latest project on the bench is a new dspod daughtercard. This one is based on the ESP32P4 in the form of the M5Stack Stamp P4 module (used here because the bare ESP32P4 isn't available through distribution yet). This MCU has no wireless capability, but does include dual-core 360MHz RISC V CPUs, 32MB of PSRAM in package and all the rest of the typical peripherals you'd expect on an ESP32. So far I've got the I2S port talking to a codec. More to come as I bring up ADC, LCD, buttons and DSP algos.

Over on bsky, user tef has proposed an interesting idea: Make Washington DC into an exclave of Washington State - this gets it full representation and changes the name to DC, Washington. For those unfamiliar, Washington State already has an exclave - see Point Roberts which is only accessible by land via Canada.
Praying mantis update. We haven't seen her on the tree for almost a week, but this ootheca has appeared. I think she's accomplished her task.
Rerunning this one today for... reasons.

Last year I inherited an HP85 from a friend and it's been sitting in my office ever since. Today I powered it up and keyed in that program. With a few slight changes, here's what it looks like.
Yes, it's slow and low-res, but in 1980 256x192 monochrome graphics with floating point was amazing stuff. If only computers these days could be so transparent and friendly.

Long ago I had a summer job at the University of Oregon Physics Dept, working for Prof. Russell Donnelly and it was like drinking from a firehose of science and computing. In some spare moments I played with an HP85 Personal Computer, working through some of the examples in the owners manual. One of these examples was a lightbulb moment that showed me how trigonometry could be useful - a simple circle drawing program in HP BASIC:

We still mask when running errands involving entering enclosed places (stores, restaurants, etc) - it's just habit at this point and we rarely get any reaction from others especially since we live in an area with a high concentration of Asian folks who seem to do this more regularly. Today while out shopping a cashier asked if there was "anything going on" she should know about and we assured her that this is just our habit, although we have enjoyed not getting colds/flu/etc for the last 6 yrs.

Taking the whole McConnell situation as an example, I'm guessing that if/when 47 joins the choir eternal we won't actually find out about it. The GOP will pretend he's still there, have his staff keep firing off unhinged late night Truth Social posts and the occasional EO and the whole wheezing machine will keep trundling along until the next election.

I posted this picture a few weeks back and since then this praying mantis has continued living on this tree. During the days she hangs out near the flower clusters, ambushing pollinators for meals and consequently she's almost doubled in size. Tonight we've got a big wind storm coming and the branches are swaying a lot so she's moved down closer to the ground where things are more stable. It's been an interesting experience tracking her behaviour.
