God I love my friends. I've got @skinnylatte posting about biryani flavored condoms immediately followed by @chozari saying 'Don't snort the bumbu seasoning from mi goreng noodles.' Edit: also me, supplying an extremely dirty interpretation to Walt Whitman's 'I contain multitudes.'
Morning toots.
I spent Tue-Wed feeling like I had the worst flu ever but today I'm feeling better — still fragile but well enough to log on for work.
While I was sleeping some colleagues generously put my name on an article for The Conversation that draws on some work I did in partnership with Prof Kath Albury:
We've heard a range of things about the DDoC Bill including that it no longer includes ministerial discretion to define harms, that it now contains an exception for health promotion and harm reduction, and that it's likely to be referred to a Senate committee (which would be great — we could give evidence highlighting all its flaws).
Fantastic read on open source maintainers.
THIS DOES NOT SPARK JOY. #obsidian
I've had fatigue and breathlessness for several months. GP sent me for an iron infusion, which made zero difference.
GP is now concerned I might have something called autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, so I got a bunch of tubes of blood drawn this morning and I'm saving all my urine for 24 hours.
Apparently this is easy to treat... with prednisone. Which I can't take, because it is notorious for triggering bipolar episodes.
Second line therapy is four weeks of rituximab, which I took in my early 30s for a blood disorder, so I know it's safe and tolerable.
Guessing there will be some arguing about the prednisone first though. And I feel so awful I really don't want to wait.
Kiwibank is desperately trying to stop people saying they want to fuck its sheep mascot.
This is why you need multigenerational input into ad creative and sign-off. A gen Z would have spotted this disaster in the making from a mile away.
From the reviews for a major gallery. There is something qwhite interesting here.
Help me resolve a tiny dispute. Are the pills on the right pink or orange?

IA(some weird kind of)L and there are many things tech folks espouse as truth that make me wince but the touching faith in the GPL makes me want to cry.
Never been tested in court.* The drafting is essentially fan service for technolibertarians.
* The one case that did litigate the issue in relation to a different nominally open source license was the recent USSC decision on Android and that went Google's way, i.e. in legal terms it behaved like a traditional license rather than conferring rights to free use.
Finally someone made sense of that Toto lyric and somehow I feel bad for laughing as hard as I did.
TICKLE VERSUS GIGGLE IS OVER AND TICKLE WON!!!
You know me, I'm all about food, so I donate to the UN World Food Programme and World Central Kitchen. WFP are active in Nepal, where 25% of kids under 5 have physical stunting from nutrient and calorie deficiencies in their everyday diet.
If you want to donate to emergency food distribution, World Central Kitchen have spun up agreements with local restaurants and food producers, and essential meals are being provided right now to people displaced from their homes and their communities.
Something to keep in mind: there is ongoing famine in Sudan and Gaza and elsewhere, and these crises will only intensify if WFP and WCK have to reallocate limited resources. Please give generously.

I'm in a cheerful café called Floozy in Newcastle CBD. They are playing early Dolly Parton classics and I'm about to cry.
You guys I just started hearing time signatures in music.
It started when someone pointed out the change of time signature in a guy playing 'Golden Brown' on a harpsichord was not very JS Bach and I could hear that.
Then I watched this Reel of a Muse track played on what I can only describe as an electronic hurdy-gurdy and it sounds AWFUL.

I have always theoretically understood time signatures but never 'heard' them!
Here's an interesting example of AI anti-hype.
You might have read outraged coverage saying AI companies are buying up vintage books to scan them and shred them.
The source?
It turns out to mean one book seller offered to source vintage books for AI training.
That's bad, but it's nothing like the claim that this is an industry wide practice.
If you were my keys, where in my apartment would you be?
These 'four ingredient broccoli cheddar DUNKERS' look like dog turds on a plate and they are presented as a healthy option for eating your vegetables. America WTF?
Aussie friends: I need the dumbest smart doorbell available.
I live smack bang in between about eight breweries and every so often some drunk arsehole pushes my doorbell for funsies.
The other night I was expecting an overnight delivery and someone was pushing the doorbell repeatedly so I woke up, got dressed, went downstairs, and there was this malevolent drunk outside the door.
Who are you looking for?'
'Looking for [street number]' he said, sounding all pleased with himself.
My facial expression didn't change. 'Good on ya' I said, sounding perfectly friendly as I slammed the door in his face.
Took the batteries out of my doorbell and went back to bed.
In the morning I reflected on this mildly unsettling experience and in particular on the sadness of the guy and the smallness of his sadism.
I want to ask him: 'Really? You're a grown man pushing doorbells to wake people up? And that's your fun?'
Anyway, I need a dumb smart doorbell. Needs to have a camera, needs to be programmable not to ring past 10PM, needs a phone app, preferably doesn't connect to the Internet.
Study finds pretty much all LLMs will change the meaning of your text - turning an atheist position into 'Jesus was real' for instance.
Edit: I'm getting replies suggesting this is obvious and I don't think it is. It's not fabulation and it doesn't result from weights or the GPT — it most likely results from differences in the guardrails different megacorporations apply to their LLM products. That's a novel finding.
I'm obsessed with this Indonesian siamese catto with the creaky voice. Another Indo user asked, very politely, 'ur cat get syndrom?'
