Computers were not a mistake.
The Internet was not a mistake.
The mistake was allowing everything to be about money and power rather than community building.

I logged in tonight and Linode Cloud Manager wouldn't even load until I unblocked launchdarkly.com. I have opened a ticket expressing concern about this. More as it develops.
LLMs are the "just one more lane, bro" of the computer world. Throwing more resources at a flawed technology will not make it better, and has made things demonstrably worse.
But of course this famous axiom is in play: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it" - Upton Sinclair

Headline: TSA officers now not allowed to sit down while checking boarding passes and IDs
> TSA defended the move, saying the document checkers are the first to interact with the traveling public and requiring them to stand will create a better experience for passengers.
It absolutely will not! Every document checker I've interacted with to date has been quite pleasant. That will not be the case if that poor soul has been on their feet for multiple hours.
Since we're abandoning norms left and right in FOSS, I wonder how long until the Linux kernel team says "Screw it. Longterm kernels are only 18 months now."
This list is getting longer not shorter https://v6check.miyuru.lk/failed #IPv6
I learned about THERAC-25 in college. I was also in college when 9/11 happened, and the PATRIOT Act was passed. This might give some insight as to why I am the way I am today.
Being a consumer is exhausting. I usually remember to check the freshness date on the things I buy at the store, but I spaced today. Oh, look, the four pack of muffins I grabbed has a best-used-by date of tomorrow.
Reminder: "not that bad" means there is still badness. Less of a move in the negative direction than expected is not a move in the positive direction.
I'm trying to find a history of the #Debian project leader elections. I can find the list of previous leaders (eg: who won) but I'd like to find a list of all previous candidates. The theory I'm trying to prove is that the most recent election is the only one in which a single person ran for the office.
I just happened to notice Linode Cloud Manager calling out to a bunch of servers in the launchdarkly.com domain. Upon investigation it looks to be some shady AI shit. I added filters for it in uBlock Origin.
Want to take a small step toward using #IPv6 but the whole provider landscape looks awful where you are? Start using [::1] instead of 127.0.0.1 when you need to talk to localhost by number. It will do quite a bit toward rooting out some of the last places where there is a legacy dependency, as well as getting you and the people around you used to the new ways.
This trend of putting the username and password prompt on separate web pages and generally disrupting password keeper plugins is becoming very tiresome.
Mastodon is but one application in the Fediverse that speaks ActivityPub.
Gajim is but one application in the ? that speaks #XMPP.
What do we call that collective system? Especially since the copyright people get prickly about still calling it Jabber.

some? The number of hallucinations in my critical infrastructure needs to be zero tyvm.
I was thinking about whether I could go become a bus operator, but I realized today I'd probably get fired pretty quickly for "forgetting" to collect fares.
Friendly reminder: When configuring nginx server blocks, you have to explicitly listen on both address families:
listen *:80;
listen [::]:80;
Many examples I've seen only include the first line. If you don't include the second line, I will get a Connection Refused trying to reach your site. Happy Eyeballs will paper over this if you're dual stack, but on a single stack network I'm stuck not being able to see your content.
(so as to avoid That Guy™ getting in my replies: listen [::]:443; for HTTPS)
New moon? They swapped it out that fast?
