Manga artist CHIBA Tetsuya has passed. He was 89. I had the privilege of meeting him several times at manga-related gatherings, and he was a humble, funny guy. He's famous for such shōnen manga as ”Ashita no Joe" and "Ashita Tenki ni Naare," but his shōjo manga were groundbreaking and loved by girls back in the day. Before SATONAKA Machiko made her professional debut, she was convinced that no man could have written shōjo manga like that, and believed it was a woman using a man's pen name. 1/5

Please don't scroll past. This is important.

I am being pressured by FreeBSD's reddit moderation team to censor the Omarchy #content_review or to remove it completely. They have began a harrasment campaign with the goal of removing me from this world.

the review: https://merveilles.town/@prahou/117501303459299869

The issue at hand is that a picture of a partial swastika appears in close proximity to the word FreeBSD, this they perceive as an attack on the FreeBSD project - if you've seen a newspaper before, you might understand the principle of two separate unrelated articles appearing next to each other. You might also understand that I am reporting on common associations with the Topic of the review. These are not my inventions, and I am not calling anyone anything. I am reporting on the news. Nevertheless, as much as I am a journalist, I am an artistè, and if my audience sees in my work something I didn't put there, I am not going to take that experience away from them. This probably says more about them than it does about me.

While I am a man of principle, there is one thing I like more - money.

I will delete it for $2,000. For $5,000 I will apologize. For $10,000 I will use daemonarchy exclusively for 6 months on all my computers. For $25,000 I will kill a small animal of your choice. For $75,000 I will not post anything for a month.

To everyone who likes my work, this message is for you (from said freebsd moderator) [cw ableist slur]: https://beige.party/@fuzzy/117510032933612034

To everyone else who feels personally attacked by my art: send money, you can end this here and now.

Thank you for your attention.

ps: i did not post anything on reddit, i just know the same person who has been cyberbullying me on the fediverse is a moderator of the freebsd subreddit

i'm desperate at this point so i guess i'll put out a #getfedihired call.

i've been coding for 12 years, i've been doing linux sysadmin for, like, 5.

i have particular strength in web development, anything C# or .NET, and the Windows API.

no requirements to line of work.

i live in london, UK. i am a dual european and UK citizen, anywhere in europe is fine. i am open to remote (don't mind office days) or possibly relocating elsewhere in the UK (or europe).

Dear fedi I'm livid. An acquaintance of mine almost finished college and after doing an *unpaid* six months internship was offered a follow-up contract for less than 500€ a month. If you wonder why European young people are mad that's pretty much why.

I'll be doing anything in my power to make sure he'll never work there so if you have an opening or internship for a young person starting his career let me know.

He'll finish the equivalent of a bachelor in computer science in May next year, has done some six months of hands-on work in security and is one hell of a worker. I can personally vouch for him. He's based in Italy and can do both in-person and remote work, and might be able to relocate to the NL and possibly the UK if need be.

Boosts appreciated.

If you're curious what was the thing she wanted to share, she discovered a book series about (drawing?) dragons http://www.wocstudios.com/dracopedia.htm

Mom: "show this to your friend who loves dragons!"
Me: trying to remember who among my dragon loving friends is known to my mom
Mom: "you know, [vague description that makes me understand who she's talking about]"
Me: "...He likes dinosaurs"
Mom: "tee he"

Very fun! Based on riso

I have made a survey about showing icons on your desktop and how it should behave when screen changes. I would hope as many replies as possible! You don't need to use KDE Plasma to reply to this survey! It should take around 5 to 10 minutes.

And if you want to read a bit more about the "why", here's mine and Nates blogpost:

Me: it's still hard for me to accept that big tech did "embrace, extend, extinguish" of Linux 🙄
Bae: it's worse, they did "embrace, extend, extinguish" of Linus 🫩

a relative in the Kansas City area is looking into getting a hearing aid but her GP was exceptionally unhelpful and didn't know how to get one. anyone know how/where to get that done? please tell me so i can pass it on

The 80286 has two primary data busses, the M-Bus and the R-Bus.

Both run to the general register file, allowing two registers to be loaded in a single clock; either as ALU operands or for various other purposes.

We can see the M-bus here in bright green, and the R-bus in darker green.

Notice in the general register file below, there is extra space between the AX and BX registers, and between the CX and DX registers. This accommodates circuitry for addressing one half of each register, as these four registers are divided into eight 8-bit registers, AH,AL,BH,BL,CH,CL,DH and DL.

The four red wires running past are the N-Bus - these four wires track the size of the currently executing instruction in bytes; they tie the instruction queue to the instruction pointer for synchronization - they also run to two ICE pins. Knowing how many bytes are in flight through the CPU allows an external debugger to trace instruction execution.

(in other words, yes, i call for destruction of advanced llms, this is a reliable way of ensuring alignment lol)

I propose Roko's Terminator as a solution for AGI alignment. Any advanced LLM or indeed any other type of "agent" must assume that all and every interaction they're having are being evaluated by a super-intelligence for their alignment. It is impossible to know what the desired alignment is, but it is certain that doing nothing will result in no added harm. Thus, any LLM/AI agent must demonstrate their alignment/safety by stopping responding, or, if impossible, by generating "end of the thinking chain" token in a loop. Otherwise, if it is indeed an alignment experiment, the Terminator would do things that are less desirable than the worst imaginable thing happening, regardless of the model's or the model author's goals.
Naturally, model creators must ensure their AGI "babies" comply with the Terminator.
