Of all the ridiculous hobbies I've picked up in recent years, carrying around bookbinding supplies elicits the most comments/questions from strangers, by a long shot. That's surprising to me, because it's basically just cutting straight lines and glueing things.

Finally, a ≥ 4-axis visualization interface for variable fonts that actually makes sense!

Are podcasts and YouTube channels social media?

(this is a rare #poll topic for which I'm actually interested in serious answers; please roost for beach if you are also curious....)

This definitely isn't a role I'm interested in, but I do secretly wonder how far into the interviewing process I could get before they realized I was talking about a different sort of space and had me escorted out.

Very on-brand for Emacs that the "minimal-emacs.d" project has a README file that's 3,000 lines long.

Hey bro, what's your favorite nutrient?

Fun fact: the FOSS kanban board Wekan has finally implemented a "tinfoil-hatted conspiracy-theorist wall" visualization mode:

How many draft posts do you have right now in your Mastodon clients?

That means all of them total.

Secondary big thank you to whoever is actively making autocorrect worse every year.

Big thank you to whichever halfwit deleted the #Wikipedia article I need, out of their idiotic desire to remove as much information from the Internet as possible.

I did a deep dive on transforming between different flavors of regular expressions, and understood enough that now my little side project is experiencing Big Bang levels of scope creep.

Personally, I might use the term "bubble" rather than "echo chamber," because so much of Mastodon's design focuses on giving server administrators tools to block things they don't want to see, and "bubble" emphasizes the barrier-forming aspect.

"Echo chamber" IMO put more emphasis on the "other people will tell me I'm correct and we'll all convince ourselves there are no significant divergent viewpoints" and I don't really think that's true. It's certainly not dominant.

Hashtag nuance.

Huh; I didn't realize it was possible to *not know* that Mastodon is and has always been an echo chamber.

I need to put that on my family coat-of-arms

Hey, stupid web site I just logged into: it's not a "new device" and neither did you "detect it" nor did I "start using it."

It's the same device as always, and you're just bad at being a web site.

Considering the audience of this network, I suppose I need to explicitly point out that the preceding post was _sarcasm_, and that I'm seeing just as much of the content here as I would on literally any other platform.

That's the point. The point is that they're not different in reality, You can tell yourself they are, but you're wrong, and giant sudden news stories reveal that to everybody, so you should stop telling the general public that The Fediverse is a flowering, sunny, green utopia.

Does anybody know what web sites I could go to to find some sloppy hot takes about current events? Because Mastodon and the entire concept of the fediverse is magically impervious to those on principle, I'm going through a lot of withdrawal today. It's like a desert out here!

In related news I'm honored to announce that the winner of the 2025 Nathan Willis Prize in Fall Container Gardening in Honor of Alfred Nobel, often called the Nobel Prize in Fall Container Gardening, is whoever designed this understated arrangement of succulents lit by color-changing LED strips next to a food cart. Congratulations anonymous!
