Patrick Stewart showed you can be a famous and influential white man who people love and isn’t shitty to marginalized folks, and doesn’t sexually assault people. Like…I know that’s a low bar but the man did live a genuinely good life and it was always a delight to see him in a movie or show, especially when hanging out with his gay bestie

This has to be the biggest single theft of all time, right?
(Not counting stuff like wage theft, of course.)

Over and over, I tell my students things like
“stated job requirements are mostly meaningless, just box-checking HR Mad Libs”
and “companies are terrible at hiring and mostly have no idea how to do it”
and “getting hired involves somehow talking to a real human being at the company who is involved in the job you’re applying for, which involves first getting past a gauntlet of nonsense generated by people and machines that know nothing whatsoever about the work and that in fact may be in direct opposition to every need and desire of the people who’d want to work with you”
and “the job interview process is mostly not even about you •at all•, so never take it personally.”
…and they give me such blank looks, like the words coming out of my mouth aren’t even real sentences. But:
The new castlevania game is very good. (FWIW dead cells, Metroid, and castlevania are some of my favorite games of all time.)
But seriously, it is a great concept, well done. And a great combo of hard, interesting, and with great accommodations when it gets too hard.
And it is best played with friends! The puzzles are just kind of too hard without help, but they are tons of fun with it.
But either way, it is fun enough you never get bored or frustrated.
Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.
ALL ROAD USERS.
What about painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.
For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Yeah they also saved Aristotle for us.
What westerners consider our legacy was not even maintained by us!

The word “algorithm” is derived from the family name of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, a Persian who lived in Baghdad and not only wrote down the instructions for what we now call “long addition” and “long multiplication” etc. — the instructions that European schools used for 400+ years — but also…
…invented algebra. You know, nbd, just a Persian-Arab thing.
“They don’t produce science”?!?? The Islamic world •gave Europe science•, you dimwit. Not that RFK would know science if it came up and bit him.
@marcoarment no idea how it is where you live, but my local apple business team in Portland was able to grab a duo from the daily shelf stock, which I picked up today.
There’s still no guarantee of day 1 access, but they should be able to put you first in line for any retail stock, and should get you a phone way earlier than your delivery date.
@caseyliss @atpfm My favourite discovery so far!

This is a damning piece, both on how democrats spend money on consultants, and how they let those consultants choose policies based on donor desires rather than voter preferences
I am reminded again how in 1935, the US Congress passed a tax law that created a new top tax bracket of nearly 80%.
That tax bracket contained exactly one person, John D. Rockefeller, and was designed to stop him from causing so much trouble.
In case anyone needs the precedent.
Holy crap, this chart of data from the US Dept. of Commerce is *wild*
construction of data centers is on an increasing trajectory ...
... while construction of nearly everything else (housing, commercial properties, etc) is on a decreasing trajectory
it's a zoomed-in scale on the chart, but this trend would be striking even zoomed out

Four will live forever.
You will explain it to your grandkids, and they will groan and say, “yeah, we *know*, geez”, and you will say, no, I have to explain, and they will say no, you don’t, but you will be sure you really do because they don’t quite understand, and so you will try and they will shout you down, and so fine, you’ll stop, but while quiet you will still be sure that really they don’t know just how important four is. And sadly, you will be right.
They don’t *really* understand four. God it hurts.
McDonald’s USA
— Employee: $15/hr, no benefits
— Big Mac: $5.90
McDonald’s Denmark
— Employee: $22/hr, 6 weeks vacation, 1 year paid maternity leave, life insurance, pension

Tell us more about how raising the minimum wage would affect the cost of hamburgers.
Also Denmark has a functioning free healthcare system.
Damn commie bastards!
Ken Thompson, 1983: wouldn't it be awful if someone snuck secret code into a compiler that broke our ability to trust the output of a computer
AI Guy, 2026: wouldn't it be cool if we stuck something we know can't be trusted into every part of the computer
I am reading Ada Palmer's _Inventing The Renaissance_.
(I mention it cuz I'm on my cooldown beer before bed, and I will read it now and read it when I go to bed.)
It's early days, but so far, so good.
Old-school narrative history fans, I think, will be taken quite aback.
Not by her marshalled facts, which are reasonably well-established. But by her twin insistences, which she makes very clear early on.
This was a useful roundup.

I don’t feel strongly about robot taxis, but I *do* feel strongly that taxis should be specially designed, not just normal cars.
The black cabs in London are better in multiple key ways. When traveling with my parents and kids, we have to get two cars (six passengers) in every city except London.
