How exactly did I miss this amazing "Punk Rock Vegan Movie" by Moby anyway?

"So I thought that vegan meant being a mad vegetarian, not necessarily that you didn't eat dairy." -- Amy Lee (Cold Cave), in Punk Rock Vegan Movie

In the early days, the Free Software community necessarily(?) and grudgingly depended on proprietary software, such as the operating system, the C compiler, the shell, and set out to fix this asap, creating GNU and Linux, working to achieve freedom and autonomy.

It seems that the "Open Source" movement in the late 90s already threw some of that progress away by depending pragmatically on proprietary software and happily buying "technically excellent" hardware that needed non-free firmware.

After some 40 years, now that we finally cut all dependencies to non-free software (and almost! hardware), a surprisingly large part of "our" community runs after yet another "shiny" proprietary service, advocating for the "right" to inject this new dependency and throwing away our autonomy. I'm so puzzled.

So, Debian has fallen, thanks to the (infiltration of?) tech bro supporters. What a truly sad day. How did this happen?

The "social contract" has now been compromised IMHO: It allows for contributing to the destruction of life on our planet as we know it, is generally OK with copyright theft and copyleft whitewashing, and will contribute to the slop-to-code ratio on the interwebs. I would never have imagined this. The social contract felt safe...

I've been most exclusively using Debian from 1998-2016 and considered become a -developer a couple of times.

My daughter was advised/encouraged by their teacher to take a Linux (sic) command line course.

She was enjoying it until she unexpectedly hit a paywall at chapter 4 (of 6).

Can you recommend a free as in freedom GNU/Linux command-line course or tutorial?

Also, the @tdose 20y birthday cake came with a #vegan option ❤️
#tdose

Last year at @tdose, i somewhat cornily remarked how the social dinner was a bit of a "animal cruelty feast" (only three of the ~15 dishes were plant-based). It was sufficient as a dinner, though.

My remark was noted and taken in the most positive way.

This year, (thanks @wynke), at least half of the dishes were vegetarian, probably 40% was #vegan. Amazing, and ty, ty, ty!

I believe that even @fosdem could (should?) learn from this!

Q: Do you have any allergies?
A: Yes, I'm allergic to animal cruelty.

Someone really tried to convince me---did they have shares?---to use LLMs:

"It's like having an extra junior programmer at your disposal!"

OMG, not another junior, please!

The only reason to waste your time on a junior programmer, is so that they might learn and grow faster, and in a couple of years the time they cost you, and you invested in them, may just start to pay off. It's always a gamble though. Who is worth "wasting" your precious time, that's a difficult decision which needs experience and luck.

I really cannot imagine what they were thinking, trying to sell wasting time on LLMs to me?

New post?

After fifteen months of hacking since our last post on the Hurd, we now present the 64-bit Hurd on Guix. Read all about it in this new post:

[Much of] This work was sponsored by NLnet -- thank you!

You can follow my work-in-progress here:

https://codeberg.org/reasonable-sourcery/dezyne/src/branch/wip-blue/

Still hooked on BLUE. Hacked all day yesterday and today converting Dezyne's (https://dezyne.org) build system. Opened six issues, and two pull requests, one already merged.

It's not perfect *just* yet, in fact, some issues are show-stoppers for BLUE to replace Autotools for Dezyne, which has a pretty "interesting" build system.

I would very much recommend to anyone who has a soft-spot for build-systems and/or Guile to take a look.

However, the experience of hacking a build system in Guile is amazing! And I'm certain the show-stoppers will be resolved some time soon.

And also mentioned: the Hurd switched to using static in-filesystem translators using my xattr patches I wrote for the Linux

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=88ee9d571b6d8ed345f877e05f685814412e359b

and Hurd kernels:

Great talk by @samuel_thibault of #GNU #Hurd fame, in a packed room, selling the the Hurd really well (in my not entirely unbiased opinion, of course) and starting with

It's all about Freedom #0,

and also Freedom from the system administrator. We know all about that, isn't right #Guix folks?

And although @debian is really still carrying and championing the Hurd effort, plenty of attribution to the work of others, mentioning Guix at least three times!

Some accounts always give me a favorite (which iiuc, and as apparently almost nobody knows, still has no impact on anyone or anything?) and leave it at that, just continuing to post images without ALT text.

As the fediverse seems to become more popular, more and more frequently I see great posts on my timeline that include an image without ALT text. So sad!

Disregarding the sadness, when I think the message deserves spreading, I usually first add a response with the ALT text, and then boost the original post (with the image without ALT text).

Is that OK? Are you experiencing this too? How do you handle it? WDYT?
