Really sad to see people I respected take a big dump on PHP today. It was unnecessary. This is open source. Things run on too few donations and mostly unpaid work.

These people work hard. They deal with entitled users in bug trackers. They sift through slop reports and slop contributions. They have to defend their infra from thieves who can afford to lose more money in an hour than they will not make in a lifetime. They have to drop everything when their unpaid project has an emergency.

Depending on your fedi timeline the reaction to php2shell you might either have seen are:

Either, celebrating an enormous and thankless effort to fix things, done by people who on average are probably paid close to zero for this.

Or, one of the world's worst peanut galleries saying "Well, *I* would just have…" – consisting in large part of people who no one wants to let within 10 feet of their server architecture and who never tried working with others.

So today some of the worst people on earth using the most environmentally destructive tools on earth brought down a huge part of the internet by exploiting a potential problem found many years ago in PHP which was previously not practical for anyone to exploit.

It only became "practical" to exploit this problem because "AI" came along to automate the boring and repetitive work required to do so. Absurd amounts of computing power were applied specifically to break into other peoples' websites.

Now the same people who are behind this are trying to pretend that they're heroes for finding an exploit.

"AI uncovers critical vulnerabilities", their headline reads. But the vulnerability was only made to be critical by the very same people as hide behind that headline.

Many thousands of websites are offline, many people are losing money, many thousands of people are working hard to try to patch or work around the problem, many small guys are finding it almost impossible to patch, and we're all supposed to be thankful to OpenAI and others involved ? Nah. Fuck off.

Everything about "AI" involves a lot of externalized costs, but I've still yet to see even a single positive thing that has been achieved by "AI". That has definitely not changed today.

"This issue is not specific to the Wikimedia Foundation, but affects any website running PHP. This is a significant internet security vulnerability that many organizations are responding to right now.

We are working to avoid downtime for our wikis, but we have deliberately taken many of our supporting services offline until they can be safely patched."

A little off-topic for this account, but just wanted to take a moment to say a big thank you to all the Wikimedia SREs, Incident Coordinators and everyone else involved in keeping Wikipedia up and running during this PHP vulnerability[0].

The review time for @CoMaps on Google Play has also hit a new record time: 16 days and still counting…

If our map updates would still be tied to app updates, Google Play users would get extremely outdated maps…

Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is still stonewalling UK staff's unionization effort, dragging their feet on negotiations. The Foundation's attempt to reduce the size of the bargaining unit is now heading to arbitration:

My current little kink of the academic kind is to refrain as much as I can from suggesting things I know I won‘t do. And to issue a breath-like hmmm when the other suggests things I know I won‘t do. That‘s how I know I‘m doomed to never become an administrator.

For the coordinated installation of a scheduled security release, some of the Codeberg member services (forum, membership form and voting system) will be turned off at 21.10. 14:00 UTC. Once the updates are finished they will be available again.

FTA: "Academia’s duty to protect open knowledge like that produced on Wikipedia is grounded in its privileged position within and structural connection to knowledge."

And to think once #academia, including some #librarians, thought #Wikipedia was evil incarnate not to be used. How time flies.

Since a few days, we got our first CDN node in Latin America. Provided and run by the amazing Undernet community in Uruguay, @santiago!

Thanks to them, users in the region will benefit from faster map downloads. For a start, we are exploring how well it works with users based out of Uruguay, Argentina and Venezuela.

If you are interested and able to help your local area in a similar way, get in touch!

And you can learn more about Undernet here: https://undernet.uy/
