To be clear, the “private CA” I speak of is the one my org uses for internal services. We don't use short-lived certificates because there is zero justification for doing so in this context. And yet, Apple rejects all of our certificates because they're not “standards compliant”, nevermind that the standards in question are irrelevant to a private CA. As a result of this nonsense, Safari is essentially unusable on our network.
CA/B Forum: “Your private CA's long-lived certificates are NOT COMPLIANT!!! You CAN'T USE THEM!!! 🤬🤬🤬”
Also CA/B Forum: “eMudhra is a perfectly trustworthy #CA. Pay no attention to their proud use of AI in security-critical operations, nor to the fact that they used the exact same private key for literally a dozen different CA certificates, nor that the private key is 4.”
News flash: red tape and buzzword-laden checklists do not beget #security. Patient diligence does.
I notice that pictures involving #eyeContact are fairly often #CW'd on the #Fediverse. Why is that? I take it some people have a sensitivity to eye contact? I want to know more!
The existence of QIC-80 implies the existence of SLO-40.
Apparently the new Tesla Roadster has compressed-air thrusters for limited flight.
I guess I get to add “death from above” to my list of things to worry about while riding in a car from now on. Great.
Back in my day, us kids referred to this sort of thing as an “epic fail”.
What does the anti #AI crowd on Fedi think about #Rust? What will become of it?
Because like, out of all of the software that could potentially become unusable due to low-quality code, #programming languages are some of the hardest to replace, once you're committed to using one.
So, if I start a new project, what should I do?
Comment below if you think there's something else I should use instead (with good type system, build tooling, safety, zero-cost abstractions, etc).
LWN: “[Linus Torvalds] took an old patch and had the LLM revise it; the result has made him unwilling to work *without* an LLM. … Why bother, he asked, to search for all of the call sites of a function he has just modified, when the tool can fix them all automatically?”
Sounds like a language issue. I certainly don't need an #LLM to refactor #Java code.
I guess this also goes to show just how efficient John Carmack's old column-based ray-casting software renderer is, that it can render freaking 3840×2160 on the freaking CPU and totally get away with it.
Although this engine absolutely hates rendering dynamic lights in software. Frame rate totally tanks if any dynlights are visible. Oof. Dynlights hit your frame rate on Vulkan too, but not nearly as hard.
Well, here's a case that's pathological af: at the start of D2ICO MAP03, I get a higher frame rate from the #UZDoom software renderer (~135fps) than I do from the Vulkan or OpenGL hardware renderer (~60fps)!
…But only if I set resolution to 320×200. At 3840×2160, the software renderer gets about the same frame rate as the hardware renderer (~50fps).
On maps that are not so big and wide open (MAP30), the hardware renderer is much faster, as you'd expect.
How odd!
The Fediverse saw no significant change in activity over the last few days, by the way. Because we're humans, not bots. https://fediverse.observer/dailystats
The shutdown of the #Yandex data centers and subsequent drastic drop in engagement on mainstream social media platforms has laid bare what's at stake with #ageVerification #censorship.
Mainstream social media is full of bots. The only place to talk to real humans is on independent sites like this one. And how will these sites pay the staggering costs of age verification and bureaucracy that these laws demand?
There will be no place left to have a real conversation.
It strikes me that both of the most popular desktop computer lineages (IBM PC and Macintosh) were initially marketed as Very Definitely Not For Gaming.
I wonder what was up with that? #Gaming has sold quite a lot of silicon over the years. Seems pretty lucrative.
Saw your article about keyboards. One minor thing to add.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Pause key would typically pause the video game you were playing, while showing only a small “paused” banner while otherwise leaving the screen undisturbed. Useful if you wanted to photograph the screen.
Esc would also pause the game, but would also overlay a menu (new game, save, quit, etc).
Most games these days still have the traditional Esc function, but no longer recognize Pause.
Roko's basilisk posits that future artificial intelligence will seek to punish anyone who did not, in its opinion, contribute sufficiently to its creation, in order to retroactively incentivize people to create it.
I…don't even know where to start with this.
In order for this to even work as an incentive, the future #AI would have to somehow send a message to that effect into the past…in which case we would have already received it, which we have not.
In light of the recent release of #CoyoteVsAcme, this seemed topical.
This is disappointing. A list of scammers could've been useful, but a list of people who inconvenienced the list maintainer is not.
Therefore, I do not recommend using Linux is Best's list.
The person known as “Linux is Best” (or “Linux and BSD are Best”) maintains a list of suspected scammers on the Fediverse. https://gitflic.ru/project/fediverse-express/fediverse/blob?file=block_spam_scam_users.csv&branch=main&mode=code
However, @ricci recently asked https://discuss.systems/@ricci/117380019991499238 about the methodology of the list, and for this he was added to the list.
Similarly, Linux is Best was recently banned from https://catodon.rocks following an argument with the admin @panos https://catodon.rocks/notes/ar6v0c9uuhwr04vh and subsequently added said admin to the list. https://gitflic.ru/project/fediverse-express/fediverse/commit/0700ac4e530b66e18d787a07843eb6bd5816b92a
