The PHP #security issue shows once again how much our society relies on mostly volunteer work.

Look at PHP Foundation @thephpf finances:
https://opencollective.com/phpfoundation#category-BUDGET

- Reimbursed $67K on development work this year
- Received: $642,755 last year

Compare these numbers with the amounts companies have made with products & services built upon #PHP. Our digital foundations are built on the backs of #opensource volunteers. Governments & companies need to invest in our common digital infrastructures.

Reading @alineblankertz & @malteengeler book 'Digitale Solidarität' in German 🤓

My understanding so far: this book aims to provide a political left perspective on how to create a better digital world than the current one. First by discussing the problems of capitalism & digitalisation followed by proposals for a diff approach. It pleads to combine digital & social issues, because they cannot be seen separately. They are part of the same struggle ✊

Aanrader!

This explains very well why "bad" code contributions by enthusiastic people can still be very worthwhile in the long run.

Also LLM's will not share a drink with you at a conference reminiscing about that time you collaborated on a piece of code, or sharing stories about stuff happening in their life.

Opensource projects dismissing these social aspects are doomed in my view.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Roelmaalderink/117319021973126519

Roel Maalderink (@Roelmaalderink) is a well known Dutch satirical comedian. Together with @bitsoffreedom he tries to connect with people at Meta while wearing their pervert glasses...giving them a taste of their own medicine. 🤣

Seems most of them are not that happy when somebody is using their company's product to invade their privacy.

Maybe they could do something about this? 🤔

We need more of this to fight back against #bigtech!

I just read that Wendell Berry died on August 31. 😥

I liked his poetry. This is one of his more famous ones (screenshot) It resonates with me, as do some of his lesser known ones although they may be a bit old-fashioned? Anyways, if you don't know Wendell Berry, check out his Wikipedia page. He was quite an interesting person.

Stumbled on this YouTube 🫣 video of the poem beautifully visualised: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-ewB0WL3bNw

Experimenting a bit with #Mailbox offerings incl #OpenTalk using a test account.

So far I'm not convinced about OpenTalk.

It feels like the devs & designers captured their processes & flows exactly without considering other flows or processes for using the software. It feels like I need to adjust to application, instead of the app catering to me & my diff flows & needs.

I prefer the simplicity of BigBlueButton & Jitsi thus far, but maybe I should test more?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I just saw a raccoon or raccoon dog sort of running away from some hedges near my home.

Important detail: raccoons nor raccoon dogs are native to The Netherlands. Huh?

Apparently raccoons & raccoon dogs have reached The Netherlands. In some parts of the country raccoons are becoming a nuisance already. Notified our municipality just in case. A bit baffled about this.

Midnight.

It is 25C outside. I'm not in the tropics nor in a dessert. It is the middle of The Netherlands. In Europe. A northern land known for ice skating in the winter. Most people do not associate The Netherlands with 30C degree summers, but I guess we will from now on.

I have never experienced these high temperatures in the night here. Considering that these are the coldest summers now. And we're the 'lucky' ones.

Scary.

Impressed by how well DeltaChat works nowadays!

https://delta.chat/en/

I could easily create an account without sharing any details. Connect with a friend's Android based phone & an iPhone. We could videocall & send small apps like a game or a shared list.

Apparently I can host my own chat relay & don't need to use someone else's infrastructure, but I haven't tested that yet.

This might be my Signal replacement. Well done @delta

RE: https://mastodon.social/@_elena/116645486985827346

@_elena took it upon herself to explore W Social.

I got weird vibes when W Social was announced at Davos. Elena's piece confirmed these feelings.

In my words:
W Social seem to be opportunists looking for a way to benefit from the need for better socials. In whatever way. They seem to operate in similar ways as #bigtech & their main objective does not seem to align with their more lofty "save democracy" statements.

RE: https://social.publicspaces.net/@publicspaces/116619084584111675

Who will join me at @publicspaces #Pubconf2026 this year?

Made a simple #LibreOffice template that should make it easier to create A5 #zines from an A4 paper. Double printed it gives 4 pages incl coverpage. I might make an A6 version as well.

I'm using LibreOffice instead of proper desktop publishing software, so that the barrier for creating zines is as low as possible.

Given everything that's happening in tech, I'm guessing zines might become a popular means to distribute information. Just like it did in the #DIY / punkscene from years ago.

Our rain water tank has a bird's bath underneath the tap because it leaks. This issue has become an important feature. The constant slow dripping of the tap supplies the bird's bath with fresh water. As a result birds, mostly house sparrows, use it as their drinking spot. It is quite literally their water cooler / coffee corner & you can see them chatting, eating & gossiping around it. It's a lovely thing to observe & great to start the morning with.

You need to sign in to contribute, so you need an account.

You need to create an account on 'EU login' which seems to be the EU single sign-on system for this.

I managed to create an account on 'EU login' & logged into my account.

However I am not allowed to login into code.europa.eu yet.

I need to add some kind of multi factor authentication first.

Ok, safety first, I can imagine why...supply chain attacks anyone....

What are my options?

Hi @tuxedocomputers on your website you mention that Ubuntu & TuxedoOS are currently highly recommended for the Infinitybook 14 Pro AMD due to fixes that are not yet part of the mainline kernel. Do you have a way to notify customers of when these fixes are part of the mainline kernel? I'd prefer to use Debian 13 instead of Ubuntu, but afaiu this currently not supported?
