Stop pretending like Sam Altman somehow fucking forced you to create, share or enable AI slop and trying to imagine your life fucking like, what, 40 months ago?

You're not being BP-marketing mind-tricked into being a slopper. You chose to do it, and stop lying about it, you cowards 🥂

Generative AI is presented as "I have to drive an ICE car to work bc there's no public transport" but it EXTREMELY IS NOT

It's way more like "I have to drive a hummer to buy shopping" / "I'm paying with Bitcoin" / "Private jet for 15min trip" / "I only drink bottled water". Cheating is tempting!!

OpenAI ambulance chasing the PHP vulnerabilities and pretending they found and disclosed them (they did not) is disgusting. It’s a media play and it’s really gross, and says a lot about OpenAI.

companies to employees a few months ago: you better use AI

companies now: wait, wait, just $29 a month on claude pls

It seems to me that the last several years have demonstrated the shortcomings of FOSS as a set of organizing principles for computing, so I've developed a set of principles meant, not as a replacement, but as a corrective, and written them out as a sort of manifesto. Check it out here: https://destructured.net/casa

Feedback welcome. Much thanks to @zoy and @alderwick and @neauoire for theirs.

An article on Aftermath about how depressing AI slop has made emulation and decompilation projects, and crushed existing communities https://aftermath.site/ai-slop-hobbies-in-software-emulation/

And hey, it links to me and @glyph's blogposts

(Thx for the heads up @mostol)

remember this when people tell you that AI is “good for accessibility”

Signed.

This is also not just about JS. The same kind of pattern applies to many more fashionable platforms.

Just as COBOL got a bad rep by people who didn't fully grasp its qualities, context and value we now see another workhorse language being shat on so people can validate their choices.

I learned to program with PHP and literally _nothing_ on the planet comes even close to being that easy to program and deploy.

Which makes "I run JS on Node with 57373 unchecked dependencies to do basic CRUD and PHP is just so bad and dumb" look really juvenile.

Don't let the Node vuln slip through the cracks just because it's harder to meme.

I’d like to take a minute to thank all the volunteer maintainers of FOSS projects and infrastructure. You keep our digital world afloat and you’re not getting the recognition or renumeration you deserve.

I’ve put together a few snacks, please take one of your choosing as a token of my thanks.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot

A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

Nothing puts the lie to "PHP is irrelevant" like "good morning, 70% of the internet needs to be fixed ASAP".

While BioWare's recent games didn't capture me like their earlier works (often due to management interference) it's just sad to see such a great studio die.

(Article title: Electronic Arts Closing BioWare, Laying Off Hundreds)

https://aftermath.site/electronic-arts-closing-bioware-laying-off-hundreds/

All the vulns lately are either "this person made a quick script to make their geocities page work better. It is now the back bone of the global banking industry" or "a team of 300 machine learning researchers made this industrial appliance and forgot to turn on the part where you have to log in"

I do kinda like this shared waiting for the PHP thing to drop. Kinda like Christmas.

The PHP #security issue shows once again how much our society relies on mostly volunteer work.

Look at PHP Foundation @thephpf finances:
https://opencollective.com/phpfoundation#category-BUDGET

- Reimbursed $67K on development work this year
- Received: $642,755 last year

Compare these numbers with the amounts companies have made with products & services built upon #PHP. Our digital foundations are built on the backs of #opensource volunteers. Governments & companies need to invest in our common digital infrastructures.
