Indigenous Peoples in Isolation

"The fourth chapter brings an analysis of the situation of Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation, especially those groups that, having not being recognized by the Brazilian state, remain in lacking any protection policy, under the imminent risk of genocide.

The Special Work Team in Support of the Free Peoples (Equipe de Apoio aos Povos Livres – Eapil) of Cimi list 119 reports of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation in Brazil, of which only 55 are currently recognized by the state agency Funai. There were 20 reported cases of invasions and damages to territories where there is the presence of up to 45 reports of groups in isolation. Ignored by the State, those whose reports are yet to be confirmed by Funai face even bigger risks front of the expansion of economic activities over the forested areas where they inhabit."

"This year’s Report: Violence Against Indigenous Peoples in Brazil, covering data from 2025 and published by the Indigenist Missionary Council (Cimi), reveals that this context of uncertainty resulted in attacks against Indigenous Peoples in their struggles for land, in vulnerability of deterritorialized groups, and in the continuity of the invasions in Indigenous Lands throughout the country."

"On the very first days of 2025, four Avá-Guarani were shot during and armed attack against their community in the Indigenous Land Tekoha Guasu Guavirá, an area in process of state recognition under intense conflict in the state of Paraná. One of the victims, shot in the spine, lost the movements of his legs. In March, a Pataxó man named Vitor Braz was murdered in the Indigenous Land Barra Velha do Monte Pascoal, in the state of Bahia, amongst the Pataxós’ struggle for the demarcation of their lands. In November, Vicente Fernandes, a Guarani Kaiowá, was also assassinated in Tekoha Pyelito Kue, in the Indigenous Lands Iguatemipegua I, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, also in a context of territorial conflicts."
