I think the thing that bothers me most about the whole J.K. Rowling thing is how cut and dry the entire situation is.
A movie or a TV show is a massive endeavor that hundreds, even thousands of people work on. From the writing room, to the actors themselves, to the directors and producers and sound and light crew, to the makeup artists and special effects, even down to the distribution network. Who's to say whether buying a movie ticket to the newest Avenger's film is going to result in some of that money ending up in the pocket of someone down the line who holds bigoted views?
Classical music and theatre isn't so black and white either. There are any number of classical musicians and stage authors who held disturbingly misogynist or racist views. But they are dead now. Does paying money to see Tristan and Isolde mean that you are supporting a known racist? Possibly...but arguably not.
And then there are the modern living authors with bigoted views such as Orson Scott Card. Men and women who definitely are bigots. Who have been vocal about their bigoted ideas when asked directly. But who, otherwise, are content to simply be bigots in private and eschew activism. What's the moral imperative there? Should I refuse to buy a copy of Ender's Game, just because I know the author's views on women? I don't know. There's an argument there about separating the author from the work that I think could be made.
But with Rowling, you have the most morally clear example of an author that you absolutely should not separate from their work, for the following reasons.
1. Books are the smallest possible unit of entertainment. When you buy a Harry Potter book, almost all of your dollars are going directly to a transphobe.
2. You have the absolute most amount of clarity about her position. She is, in her own words, a bigot who holds bigoted views against trans people.
3. You have the absolute most amount of transparency about what she uses those dollars for. She uses them to harm trans people, and to support activist groups who harm trans people as a matter of POLICY.
4. She is living. Every dollar you give her, every minute of your time and energy you spend on her, is going to a living, breathing human being on this planet who has made it her life's mission to harm trans people.
If we can't achieve moral clarity in this, the perfect storm of maximum funding, maximum clarity, maximum transparency, and maximum ability to act on it, then where the fuck even is the line? Would you also take your children to watch Mr Hitler's Funny One Man Clown Show About Gassing The Jews? Because that's barely even hyperbole.
