🚲 Et si les Réseaux Express Vélo transformaient durablement notre façon de nous déplacer?
❓Combien d’habitants pourraient-ils desservir ?

🚲 Bike parking is a key issue to promote cycling ‼️
We published 2 papers this year on that issue and we showed that
➡️ Motorists are more likely to find a free parking space than cyclists a appropriate parking space (https://doi.org/10.32866/001c.144294)
➡️ The is a mismatch between e-bike ownership and residential bike parking (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2026.105202)
Two recent articles present our papers

Professor Martine Rebetez's farewell lecture yesterday at University of Neuchâtel
A magnificent lecture that traced the history of research on climate change, trends, challenges, disinformation campaigns and ways to change course
And in Martine’s usual style: composed, calm, engaging with the audience, precise, captivating...!

🚗 New paper: The geography of opposition to motorway
In 2024, Swiss voters rejected plans to expand six motorway sections
Our study analyses voting patterns across all 2,126 municipalities
Major cities were much more likely to reject the projects, while suburban, peri-urban and rural municipalities were far more divided.
Voting patterns largely reflected Switzerland's traditional left-right political divide.
Territorial context also mattered: Municipalities close to the planned expansions often opposed the project but less than expected

📢 New paper: Beyond the commute: teleworking, mobility patterns and CO₂ emissions in Switzerland
Teleworking is often presented as a straightforward way to reduce travel demand and transport-related CO₂ emissions. Our findings suggest a more nuanced reality.
Using data from a national survey of more than 5,000 workers in Switzerland, we show that teleworking does not automatically lead to lower emissions. Its impact depends strongly on both teleworking frequency and teleworking experience.
Many thanks to Emmanuel Ravalet who led the paper and to the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF for supporting this #OUVEMA research.

🧒 Today in 🇫🇷 , children begin travelling independently at an average age of 11.6 years, compared with 10.6 years for their parents at the same age.
In just one generation, children's autonomy has declined (again)
Giving young people back the freedom to travel actively and independently between home and school is the first step towards creating cities designed with children's needs in mind

* ride in the middle 😀
Some see a whale, I see sharrows in a round-about 😉
Are you aware of studies addressing the effects of such painting? In Switzerland cyclists are advised to riddle in the middle of round abouts.
And yes, there is a whale! This 11-metre-long stuffed whale is being transported to a new museum in Fribourg/Freiburg
🚲 Cycling continues to gain momentum in 🇨🇭 !
Compared to 2024, the number of cyclists counted increased by 9%
📈 Urban areas: +9% vs. 2024 and an impressive +89% since 2010
📈 Rural areas: +8% vs. 2024 and +41% since 2010
Weather may have played a role for leisure #cycling after a particularly rainy previous year but the long-term trend is clear!
A recent Swiss study analyzed 4000 overtaking maneuvers in 7 cities:
📉 79% of drivers passed cyclists with less than 1.5 meters of clearance.
📉 34% passed with less than 1 meter
📉 Average clearance was 115 cm when overtaking at 30 km/h and 118 cm at 50 km/h
📉 Cyclists towing a child trailer were generally passed just as closely as cyclists riding alone
Between 2020 and 2025, overtaking incidents involving motor vehicles resulted in 10 cyclist fatalities and 131 serious injuries in Switzerland.
