Why does Apple know the visual identity for Apple Music looks like this across all social networks, but can’t bring themselves to use it for the actual app icon?
(Last image is an example of... if they did that.)

Luka and I never really stop thinking about icons, but we do carve out time every year on 10/24 to think about what we’re doing lately. Because of the recent work Parakeet’s done, we thought it was worth sharing some of those thoughts!
I feel like I grew up being told there was a right and wrong time to post to social media for impact, trying to account for time zones in the US, work schedules, etc. And I just can’t help but think people operate at all hours of the day, across the planet, and social media algorithms are messing it all up anyway. So like... does it even really matter anymore? Is the conventional wisdom still to try to optimize when you post, or do you say ‘fuck it’ and just post whenever?
Apple won’t report numbers on this, but I would wager the iPhone Duo ranks the highest in returned Apple products of all time.
I heard Zuckerberg can’t afford to pay his taxes. Which really means none of us can pay our taxes, because basically everyone in the world is poorer than him.
The tiniest notes not even worth a blog post:
• when folded I don’t really enjoy it
• when unfolded horizontally, it’s nice, bc it’s smaller than an iPad mini and that’s a genuinely good form factor to have on the go
• vertically is even better
• I find all the partially folded states to be stupid and useless
• the hinge is satisfying but the crease and under-screen sensors are not
• there’s no indent or lip like on a MacBook for some reason, so I almost dropped it when trying to open it
I probably use Icon Composer more than anyone in the world, yet I don’t even know who makes it, and I have no way of reliably escalating this issue, before or after release. It feels like I should have a direct line to whoever develops / developed it. Alas.
I really think that’s weird, btw. Like, if you developed an app and 99.9% of users only used it once in their life for 1 hour, while one person uses it for hours a day, several times a week, wouldn’t you want to talk to that person?
In fact, what’s worse is that an SVG that *does* have Display P3 color definitions do not display as such in Icon Composer anyway. So— I’m not sure what Apple even expects. The only way, as far as I know, to get proper Display P3 colors in an app icon is to define those colors directly in Icon Composer. Which is fine *except* for when you need complex gradients (multiple stops, radial gradient, etc).
Which I would like to do! If only Apple fixed this prior to release. But now, they might never.
I know I’m shouting into the void, but the “Use Display P3 if untagged” (SVG) setting in Icon Composer does not do what it says it does, and that’s pretty shitty.
In my opinion, no one has adequately explained the certificate authority vulnerability for normal humans. I don’t understand it. I get that “intermediate certificates” are compromised because they had weak encryption keys. But I don’t know what that *means* in practical terms. I don’t know what can happen as a result of that. I don’t understand the potential threat or exploitation.
I swear, sometimes engineers do not quite understand how much they talk above everyone else.
Happy to see the new Callsheet app icon is live!!

Surprisingly I didn’t have a “Mac” pixel icon for my website, so I made this cute little iMac G4. ☺️ https://lmnt.me/moments/
There’s tremendous value in working with an actual person who doesn’t always say yes. “No” pushes you to find a solution within constraints. I see people do new things every day using the same tools we’ve always had, but I’ve never seen AI do something a human hasn’t already done.
Real invention comes from people figuring out how to do something beyond what we already know how to do. And that’s where all the interesting stuff is anyway. The stuff that’s not been done is the stuff worth doing.
👋 Hi, I’m Louie. I make icons, playing cards, fonts, and alien languages for movies (??!)
