I've been doing low-key solar advocacy & education in my spare time since I got my rooftop panels in 2022 (longer if you count all my socials about the process!).
Solar is more than just clean energy.
It takes literal and political power from the fossil fuel industry (incl. utilities) who are burning through our planet.
And despite the fascists in the US (and elsewhere), solar is barreling ahead, remaking the world.

@susankayequinn We got rooftop solar + 2x batteries with a 12kWh inverter installed just this last December. We also got our roof replaced right beforehand. Definitely a hefty price tag overall, but we’ve already seen some pretty substantial cost savings, even while living in a state that doesn’t do net metering for systems larger than 10kWh.
Next goal is save up for a heat pump because the heater in the winter is easily our biggest power draw.

@magsol we got a heat pump too (actually just before the solar)!
That stinks that your state doesn't do net metering for larger systems. The FF industry will fight solar every way they can because it's such an existential threat to them. Too bad — they work for us, not the other way around.
You might check out Solar United Neighbors and see if they're doing solar advocacy in your state and might help organize around getting net metering for all solar :)

@magsol they're super friendly! I bet if you asked them what orgs are doing advocacy for solar in GA, they could point you in the right direction 🌞

@susankayequinn I det up my 5kw off the grid system in Mexico, but to have an isolated system is not very satisfying. Are you thinking of cooperative means of energy production, its growing in Spain, enhancing community power.

@dacig I'm not a fan of people going off-grid — we should absolutely be doing community power systems, especially microgrids with backups that can build local resiliency. It will take some (a lot) of changes to make that happen, but the more solar there is installed, the closer we get to making that possible.

@susankayequinn I went off grid bcs of the isolated nature of the house, but I would like to integratewith other systems for resilience, exchanges and fun as they show up in the (not yet) neighborhood.
