bei den Post-Mortem-Diskussionen die es nächste Woche bei Hetzner geben wird würde ich gerne Mäuschen spielen.

Gut: Kunden mit mehr als ausreichend Vorlauf darüber informieren, dass ein Update der Netzwerkinfrastruktur nur ganz-oder-gar-nicht geht (kann ich verstehen, HPE hat mal einer Uni über 5 Jahre Forschungsdaten vernichtet, weil die inkompetent ein sukzessives Update probierten).

Schlecht: Jetzt hat's genau dieser Infra doch noch die Latschen aufgestellt.

Multi-GPU, GPU hotplug, split render/display noded, zero-copy and all that jazz…

You can have all of that no problem in an X11 environment. Maybe not Xorg in its current state; although I'm reasonably sure, that except for GPU hotplug I can (and have done) all of that in Xorg.

But had all the development effort that was poured into Wayland and several redundant implementations, had all that spent on improving Xorg, we'd have the greatest graphics system now.

Instead we got… surface flingers.

Did you ever have the – uh – "pleasure" of working with CUPL? A current extension of a project required the addition of some reconfigurable combinatorial logic glue circuitry (slow, basically just some human operated switches) without introducing any oscillators/clock signals whatsoever (so that could avoid going through RF EMI testing); so no FPGAs because SPI config.

So I thought: Hey, we can use a CPLD for that. I learnt a new curse:

here's a reminder that you're holding over 8 trillion US$ in #treasury bonds, more than 30% of the #USA's debts.

If you'd all collectively liquidated those bonds you'd get back ~40 cents on the dollar (yes, a loss), but would instantly cripple the US economy. Furthermore, since the majority of the USA's GDP stems from circular transactions in the AI bubble, there's little chance for them to recover from such a blow in the forseeable future.

2) it's a problem for companies, research labs and institutions that work with information sensitive equipment. There are critical areas where you simply can't permit smartphones into, but there's still need for photographic documentation at every stop of a process.

Or 3) think BSL-3 labs: Nothing mechanical that enters such a lab will ever leave intact, and having a couple of "cheap" cameras is a boon there.

The optical image stabilizer in my mums camera is faulty (randomly jerks vertically). It was today that I learnt that apparently the whole compact digital camera product class has been discontinued across the board because "smartphones".

This makes me very, very angry. 1) no smartphones are not a adequate replacement: An average compact camera still will wipe the floor with even the best smart phone camera – the only replacement for focal length is more focal length.

In today's edition of FDO sabotaging the desktop experience: #libinput spiking a single CPU core to 100% when the mouse is moved and dropping a crapton of events when twitching it in shooter games.

Uninstall the libinput Xorg input driver directly using evdev instead; and lo and behold: No CPU spikes and perfectly smooth input.

Can the whole libinput+Wayland+"modern Linux desktop" fad (that's holding back true progress for 15 years now) now please go collectively go and die in a fire?
