Today I'm transitioning off of Xfinity and on to Quantum Fiber. Pray for me.

A lot of my policy & political positions are informed by an underlying view that the status quo is carrying us at an accelerating rate toward various intersecting apocalypses, that hopes of changing course are pretty slim, & that the urgency of the situation warrants taking some big risks.

This handsome boy is 3 years old today!

"Harrison told police that he had purchased the gun from a friend two years earlier 'for the safety of his children'."

Holy shit, every paragraph of this story is more jaw-dropping than the last. What a fucking diseased country we live in.

Today on Volts: while visiting Denmark, I talked with Kristian Jensen--former gov't minister, now head of the cleantech trade association--about the country's energy system. District heating, biomass, EVs, solar backlash, municipally owned utilities, industrial symbiosis, & more. Inspiring stuff!

What’s up with Denmark?

It is so hilarious to me that Alabama is going to elect Tommy Tuberville, one of the dumbest human beings to ever be involved in national politics, as governor. What a ridiculous state.

Since 2020, electricity bills have risen 34% for customers of investor-owned utilities, but only 19% for customers of publicly owned utilities.

Nuking the IOU model & making all distribution utilities publicly owned: people are saying.

Just wild that this is the explicit message.

I love Gerwig as much as the next guy, but a) I really don't like the Narnia books, and this book in particular was bizarre & inert, b) don't fucking use "Stairway to Heaven" in your movie, just don't, and c) this looks like cartoony CGI junk that's been done a million times. Pass me the haterade.

Some people & groups have decided that the benefits of expedited permitting are not worth the weakening of environmental provisions that the left's lawyers have traditionally used to delay/block FF projects. I disagree, but that's a value judgment everyone must make for themselves. However ...

🧵 I want to make one point about the federal permitting bill. Before I do, I'd just encourage everyone who's interested in the details to listen to this podcast, which covers them ... extensively. There's a lot of complicated stuff in there & the cartoonish portrayals you see online are misleading.

"Originalism" is like any other RW ideology: it's a skin suit, to create a pretext that there are consistent principles involved. The more power they gain, the less they need the skin suit. Thus Alito's "conception of law that is unshackled by restraint and focused solely on conservative victory."

Zombie Originalism

Adding: this will be *doubly* true if Dems win big in 2028 and are in a position to impose some accountability. The whole RW media blob, the NYT, the Atlantic, all the Very Serious outlets filled with Very Serious People will be scolding them to calm down, don't dwell on the past, look forward, etc.

The more combative Dems get, the more of this they will run into. It will be a coordinated wave of elite opinion, scolding them, tamping them down. The fight strategy *only* works if they are willing to bull their way through it, blow it off, mock it. (Their history does not raise one's hopes.)

Right-wing Christians are such deeply repulsive people.
