1. I hosted a dinner at home for a few friends yesterday, and even though I was stressed out and disappointed with myself for not making all the food I had intended to make (in hindsight, trying to make SIX different dishes was perhaps a *bit* ambitious 😅), there was plenty of food, snacks and wine, and it was nice to be in the company of people who share a lot of my values and to talk about the absurdities of 2026. Bonus: we watched an episode of #Sense8 and laughed at the silliness of having a "good policeman" character.

2. I got a ticket for the #ÓlafurArnalds concert in CDMX in November 🤩

3. I'm happy to have gotten back to reading books. I read a lot most days, but it's mostly news articles and opinion pieces and I'd been craving to get back to books! Next stop: exercise.

#ThreeGoodThings

When the "Are we the baddies?" ship has sailed and you know it.

I'm no media strategist, but I'm surprised how consistently we let bad-faith actors (or those whose opinions have been shaped by bad-faith actors) define the terms of the conversation across a range of topics.

Consider renewable energy and the need to move away from burning fossil fuels.

❌ "But global warming is a hoax. We're going through a winter storm right now!"

The moment you begin to respond to the "global warming" bit with facts, IPCC reports, and consensus among environmental scientists, you've lost.

Imagine the consensus we could build around ideas if we made an effort to be aware of the things that the bad-faith actors and their followers claim to value and could tap into them.

🤔 "Well, I know that you're afraid about the safety of your children, and I don't think you mean just the physical safety of kids from sexual predators. I'm sure you've been to places with terrible air quality. Would you rather your children grew up breathing fumes from vehicles and coal power plants, or would you rather they breathed clean air?"

Walls of ignorance are torn down brick by brick, and it's up to us to acknowledge the positions people claim, offer empathy, and demonstrate how proposed ideas are actually in alignment with their stated interests.

The endgame of the #agriculture industry, with all its "innovations" and "disruptions", is playing out in #Kenya, where the debt-ridden government was successfully bullied into banning the sharing of climate change-resilient indigenous seeds.

First you insert yourself into agriculture and introduce commercial seeds, then you "lobby" the government to force a legal end to seed sovereignty and sharing, and hurray - a subscription model for seeds! So what if the crops are less resilient and less nutritious? Quarterly profits! 📈🎉

Of course capitalism has not spared agriculture that accounts for 30% of Kenya's #GDP, but it's great to see folks fight back!

And yes, I'm aware that there are websites whose forms send you a confirmation code via email or phone number. I usually just submit the form with dummy data first and if it says "enter the code sent to your phone/email", I evaluate whether I care enough to give out my real info to do whatever I'm trying to do and resubmit the form.

I was talking to a friend about how annoying accessing services or even public WiFi has become because of login/"give us your details" requirements. What surprised me was that she's been giving out her real info (and consequently getting spammed).

So, here's a #PSA for anyone who needs to hear this - You are not obligated to give out your real info!

Public WiFi asking for my name, email, age and gender? I'm a 90 YO woman named "NoneOf" (first name) "YourBusiness" (last name) with the email "admin@(whichever website is demanding my info)". You want to send me spam? Go right ahead, you'll just spam yourself.

Hi all,

My name is Vinay, and I'm excited to be trying out social media after a gap of over a decade. I believe in the power of the unbridled, corporation-free internet to connect people and effect social change.

My long-term passions are: veganism for a cruelty-free, climate-friendly future, improving healthcare access in East Africa and beyond (I work for Maisha Meds), learning Spanish and supporting #OpenSource #FOSS projects. I also care about data privacy and transparency.

More broadly and in no particular order, I'm into homesteading, #permaculture, cycle touring, community-led projects, and queer rights.

As a peek into my life, here's a photo of this week's canasta (a local initiative that receives fresh organic veggies from a farmers' collective) here in #SanCristóbalDeLasCasas
