I've seen a few folks here mention the idea that software updates are a form of failure. Something was broken. Something was missing. Why didn't we ship it bug-free and complete?
I'm paraphrasing, oversimplifying, and overstating the point but a significant portion of updates do seem to serve software makers more than users. We can ship faster. We can add features to compete with other software makers. We are promoted for shipping a new thing. We attract investors with our rapid rate of change.
In comparison, many old terminal commands rarely change. We get mad when behavior changes. We're annoyed when dependencies bloat. We associate change with an increased risk of regression.
What would it look like to change software creation so we ship it right the first time?

LG is in the news for aggressively violating the privacy of anyone near their televisions but really all of the "smart" TV manufacturers creep on us.
The next time you buy a new screen I recommend finding a model designed for commercial signage and driving it with a little PC. There are plenty of cool projects making TV apps that won't snoop.

Maybe I should start a thread of the many decisions I make to handle my signal processing disorder. For example, I'm shopping for a small water vehicle (AKA "tender") to take to dock when my sailboat is at anchor. An inflatable dingy makes a lot of sense for a sailboat like mine (26ft/8m LOA) but the sound of almost every air pump is to me the equivalent of a fire engine siren from a meter away. During inflation I'd need to wear both earplugs and over-ear muffs which is how I survived working in machine shops.

I am deeply grateful that in 2021 an autism specialist finally identified my specific signal processing disorder because before that it all felt random and unfair.

I'm not going to try it any time soon but apparently someone wrote a 3D experience that turns your Jellyfin library into a video store of old.

I would like to see the mainstream press talk more about Gwynne Shotwell and less about Space Karen. Shotwell is the actual leader of SpaceX.

Yesterday while walking a dock to my boat I saw a brand new baby seal snoozing under a paddle board. Every once in awhile it would poke a wee nose out of the water to breath and then slip back under. It was a little bigger than an American football and I dearly wanted to snuggle it but refrained.

Y'all, more than ever before we have a real chance to change the current state of technology hypercorp suckage. The giant corps are competing with each other to borrow stupid money for "AI" while they fire a big percentage of their experienced nerds.
If a sizeable number of companies moved internal business operations to free software (or really software from anyone except the big old farts) that's a one two punch that'll crash the bubble and make way for a new wave of tech.
I suspect it's an easy sell because for more than a decade the old farts haven't shipped usable software at reasonable prices.

I have yet to see a cable label. What are each of these eight identical yellow lines lugged to a single terminal? Nobody knows.

Messes like this may function but who wants to live like that?

Once the initial outfit and trials are complete I suspect I'll remove the electrical and navigation system and then start with a clean slate. Some of the components are fine but the system has grown... let's say organically... over her 12 years.
Luckily, there are relatively few electrical components in a boat like this.

Tell me you don't follow best practices without telling me you don't follow best practices.

I don't know who needs to hear this but there are in fact cities in the US who aren't total a-holes.

If you need to go, Traction can help.

If you need to help and don't know trans folks to directly fund, give to Traction.

I don't know who needs to hear this but there's a cheap and cheerful boat building process called "stitch and glue" that can produce a variety of hull shapes and sizes. If you've always wanted to make a boat in your backyard/garage/bedroom then check it out.

I don't use streaming music but if I did Tidal would have my business because of their move to eliminate slop fakery and to demonitize the other slop.

I dig the general direction of the Flipper One, though I wish it would be a RISC-V CPU instead of Arm. I understand reasons why they chose Arm, but I still wish.

I see that the official SyncThing Android app is no longer maintained, which is a bit of a bummer as I was hoping to use it to sync markdown files instead of paying for an Obsidian subscription.

What do y'all do?

Cherenkov blue is pretty.

Ok, scifi film fans. My search chops failed to find the name of a film where someone stranded on a distant planet tries to scavange parts from a Russian rover with a big bear animation on its UI. The bear repeatedly speaks error messages in Russian which the protagonist doesn't understand.

Do you know what film this is? It's at least twenty years old, I think.
