My day job basically requires me to use LLMs (or, it is strongly encouraged) on the software that I develop. Now I understand why LLM fatigue and LLM burn-out happens. It is because you constantly have to babysit the LLM to keep it from screwing things up.

Babysitting is exhausting work. At one time in my life, as a 20-something-year-old, I was responsible for a group of 30 kids age 5 to 12. Every day I went home so drained that I could barely stay awake long enough to have dinner. I know from experience that school teachers perform some of the most labor-intensive work in the modern world.

It is what they call “emotional labor.” When other people are unable (as with kids) or unwilling (as with a lazy roommate) to live or play or work with you as a cooperative peer or team member, you essentially have to spend mental energy keeping an eye on them and making sure they aren’t doing something that is disruptive. That mental energy is a real energy cost, it really does consume calories and make you feel tired.

The worst part about it is that the LLM never really “learns.” Kids can learn to work and play with you. Lazy roommates can learn to live with you. But an LLM never really learns, and it keeps making the same mistakes over and over again. People who work with LLMs often end up keeping a directory of scripts they can deploy with a quick copy-paste so they can quickly re-explain something to an LLM. So the fatigue of watching over it and making sure the LLM doesn’t do something wrong is a constant emotional pressure, and it never gets better with age.

Apropos of nothing: Big thanks to Shiro Kawai for creating Gauche Scheme, which so far has been one of the best Scheme implementations I have used. It has worked well on every computer I have tried it on so far ({Linux, FreeBSD, MacOS} x {x86_64, i386, aarch64}). It is stable, very fast, and supports a large number of the more recent SRFIs (Scheme language extensions), it has very good compatibility with the R7RS language standard, and the Gauche REPL gosh is pretty easy to use as well.

I always run the REPL in R7RS mode, so gosh -r7 -I. -i . Scheme people, give it a try sometime if you haven’t already!

River is a Wayland compositor written in Zig that defines a window manager protocol so that, like with X11, write your own window management software. As with X11, the protocol is language-agnostic, so you can define your window manager using any programming language at all.

I have been gradually becoming more interested in Zig as a potential replacement for C in systems programming. Rust is another interesting potential replacement.

I have been writing these for over 4 months now. Not only are they long reads, but it took me a while to really get a good idea of how I wanted to express myself. I think I have had enough time to think about these ideas and these opinions that I can now express myself fairly clearly, but I’ll let you (my readers) be the judge. Of course, feel free to tag me in a Fediverse post if you want to send me feedback on what you liked or disliked about my articles. Yes, I know they are too long, I’d suggest reading them in a few sittings if you find it enjoyable.

Age verification can be abused by predators to seek out children. Age verification laws are requiring software to check the age of the user in more and more jurisdictions around the world. California’s laws are probably the most strict, requiring the age verification to happen in the operating system if the operating system can install apps over the Internet (which nowadays, includes all operating systems).

The legislators who pass these laws have been paid large campaign donations (“bribed” by any other name) to argue that these laws will give parents more control over what their children see on the Internet and what apps their children use.

But now any child predator can create a website, such as a website with nice, innocuous-looking, family-friendly, free games to play, and then collect information about people who use the website, like IP addresses, and web browser fingerprints, what kind of games are played, and of everyone who visits your website. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see what a child predator could do with such a list of users when sorting that list by the user’s age.

I can’t help but wonder if it just a coincidence that a large number of the people in the Jefferey Epstein papers have still not been brought to justice, some of whom may still be paying these bribes to politicians?

An easy way to share URLs from your PC to your phone: generate a #QRCode . I just found out that if you use DuckDuckGo (and probably other search engines), you can just enter the query like this: “qr code: https://www.example.com” and it will generate a QR code for you.

@screwlisp @kentpitman I’m just reading up on the MIT-Scheme condition system. Recent efforts to standardize this are defined in SRFI-255: “Restarting conditions”.

An older standards condition systems in Scheme was defined in SRFI-35: “Conditions”. And #Guile users can use the Guile implementation of SRFI-35 to make use of it.

I wish I had known about this two weeks ago when we first started talking about it on the #LispyGopherClimate show, but better late than never, I guess.

(by Mohammed Jamal Alrujayi)

This was an amazing article I found on the orange site published just last week. He notes that although APL and K are of the Harvard school of languages, while Lisp is of the MIT school, they are fundamentally related in their minimalism and in how the languages are structured around a single data type: Lists for Lisp, and vectors/matrices for APL. The two schools of thought were unified in the K programming language by Arthur Whitney:

On kparc.com (his personal website) he listed K’s lineage simply as “lisp and apl,” linking to Iverson’s Turing paper and Perlis’s lyrical programming.

I didn’t know much about Iverson’s family of languages (#APL, J, #BQN, K, and so on), but seeing it embedded in just a few lines of code in a high-level language like #Python suddenly makes it so much easier to understand. The syntactic keywords are basically composed of either infix operators of mapping operators, the data (constants or variables) are like leaves of the syntax tree. So all you need are three lambdas: “atom” checks if it’s argument is a number, monad serves as apply or map depending on the type of it’s arguments and abstracts it into a lambda, and “dyad” constructs an infix operator abstracted into a curried lambda. You only need those three rules!

atom = lambda x: isinstance(x, (int, float, str))
monad = lambda f: lambda x: f(x) if atom(x) else list(map(monad(f), x))
dyad = lambda f: (lambda x, y: f(x, y) if atom(x) and atom(y)
  else list(map(lambda yi: dyad(f)(x, yi), y)) if atom(x)
  else list(map(lambda xi: dyad(f)(xi, y), x)) if atom(y)
  else list(map(lambda xi, yi: dyad(f)(xi, yi), x, y)))

Now I definitely want to try this as Scheme macros!

on why settler-colonialism is an aboslute evil, how a people and their culture co-exist and evolve with nature, how their language is specific to their way of life, and how their way of life is shaped by the land on which they live. Ultimately, uprooting a people, forcing them to move to another land, necessarily destroys their way of life and erases their culture.

In a matter of days, not weeks, roughly 470,000 people will begin suffering organ failure, brain injury, and sudden cardiac death. Another 1 million are at phase 4. For children, this damage is already permanent. Even if they survive this, they will be permanently damaged for the rest of their lives.

I am only tagging this under #Gaza because it is not a political issue.

Social media influencer Cyrus Janssen shared a comment on Twitter he received on his YouTube channel from an anonymous Iranian person which was probably pretty representative of what most Iranians are feeling right now (copy-pasted below).

It is clear to me that Iranians want regime change to come from within, not because it is forced by some foreign empire, and especially not to give more control of their natural resources to the foreign empire.

I should also say, as an American, I too want to see regime change in the US, and to see the un-elected institutions of our country abolished, and I too want it to happen from within. Solidarity with Iran.

(Begin quote)

As an Iranian, I can tell you the situation is no longer just political – it’s existential. We are trapped between two collapsing structures: one internal, one external. On one hand, we face a deeply dysfunctional government, led by the Supreme Leader and the Islamic Republic’s unelected institutions.

Decades of economic mismanagement, suppression of dissent, and brutal ideological control have alienated multiple generations. No one believes in reform anymore – because every attempt has either been co-opted or crushed.

But here’s the paradox: We are also terrified of regime collapse – because we’ve watched the aftermath of Western intervention in countries like Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Each was promised freedom; each descended into chaos, civil war, or foreign occupation. So no, we don’t trust the U.S. or Israel. Not because we support our regime – but because we know how imperial powers treat ‘liberated’ nations in the Middle East.

Freedom, in their language, often means vacuum, fire, and permanent instability. Right now, many Iranians live with three truths at once: The Islamic Republic is morally and politically bankrupt. The alternatives offered by foreign actors are not liberation—they’re collapse. A bad government is survivable. No government is not. We are not silent because we agree.

We are cautious because we’ve learned – too well – what happens when superpowers decide to “help.” In a sentence: Iran is a nation held hostage by its own regime, but haunted by the fate of its neighbors. We are stuck in a house we hate, surrounded by fires we fear more.

…a film of about 80 minutes, published in January 2025, and worth every minute of your time, which explains the left-right political divide in the Jewish population of the US. This film makes very clear what motivates Jewish pro-Palestinian people in the US to protest since even before genocidal war restarted on 2023-Oct-7, and their reasons are really the most simple, relatable form of peaceful humanitarianism that you will ever see anywhere. I felt moved by how their Jewish faith makes their conviction in peace and humanitarianism so powerful. It seems in light of this most recent genocide, the views of this new generation of Jewish pro-Palestinian rights activists are slowly becoming more mainstream. Of course this invites the reactionaries to fight back against them, and we hear some of their voices in this film as well.

A website by Norman Köhring.

The 250KB Club is a collection of web pages that share certain values, especially a focus on performance, efficiency, accessibility and sustainability.

Websites in this list must not exceed 256KB compressed size!

Yes, compressed size. It makes much more sense because it allows for a lot of text to be transferred without having a big impact on the total size, while the impact of media is basically unaffected.

If your pages exceeds 250KB, you might consider 512kB.club or 1MB.club.

You can suggest a web page for this collection via Sourcehut or via Github. The site will be reviewed and, if applicable, added to the list below. Pages are checked in irregular intervals, but not more than once every week.

All entries have their own sub page with additional information. If you want, you can directly link to it from your page.

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.

Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.

Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.

A few things to be wary of:

• People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
• People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
• Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

I used to be able to search for things using a search engine. It would point me to a source of information, I could decide for myself if the source was good or not. But not anymore. Recently I just wasted a lot of time trying to find something using a search engine only to get lost in an ocean of AI slop.

I finally gave in and asked my question to ChatGPT and it answered my question perfectly, it even showed me where it got it’s sources of information. The places it linked me to were either no longer existent (if ever) or only vaguely related. But it at least created the appearance of citing factual sources of information, in whatever way the statistical models have been trained to give that impression to the humans who use it.

In Orwell’s novel “1984,” we saw how a single government agency took all control over information, how the staff would keep a database of facts but constantly alter these facts to fit the view of reality that their despot “Big Brother” wanted the citizens to believe. The same thing happens now with LLMs presenting a very carefully tuned image of the facts in the database.

AI chat bots are an innovative new method of brainwashing, one which nobody could have ever imagined possible even a few years ago: get everyone to trust a mechanical Big Brother because it chats with you like a friendly fellow human would.
