hi fedi from the miiverse applet on my nintendo 3ds!!

Cloudflare just published a vibe coded blog post claiming they implemented Matrix on cloudflare workers. They didn't, their post and README is AI generated and the code doesn't do any of the core parts of matrix that make it secure and interoperable. Instead it's littered with 'TODO: Check authorisation' and similar

the next day and a 30 minute break is not enough, because: operating a mastodon instance for eight and a half years means there are a lot of servers that it knows about in various ways, which no longer exist (and at some point the Ghost blogging software got activitypub support and so a lot of spammy ghost blogs that sprang up and then died also are in that list), and it'll try and notify every single one for every user it thinks they know about, and of course those attempts fail, go onto the retry queue, where they wait between zero and twenty seconds before going back onto the queue. workaround: simply delete the entire retry key in redis every second.

q.p status: have patched the shutdown code to take 30 minute breaks every time it queues up around 600k jobs because otherwise the whole setup is overwhelmed and it all collapses.

also the server has 128gb of hastily-allocated swap space just in case.

also the web frontend is online again so anyone who still needs to download an account export can do so (but you can no longer migrate your account; the shutdown process involves suspending all accounts, so account exports are the only thing you can access.)

thanks for having been on queer.party, it was a blast.

redis actually ended up using over 50gb of ram and even then tootctl itself just crashed. the most mastodon thing in the world is struggling with the software to do the clean shutdown procedure.

for real.

nobody warns you that when you run self-destruct, it will not simply require sidekiq to still be running, but indeed will require like 16gb of free ram just for redis itself

welp, here goes. q.p self-destruct's about to happen.

maybe the funniest thing (negative) about shutting down an instance and moving your account is, you gotta do it with enough time for fedi to coalesce around your newly moved account
BUT
you also lose access to literally anything on the mastodon web interface except for stuff like changing your password/2fa/etc, including the admin and moderation sections, so it's a good thing i got all the announcements out of the way already.

okay so i've now done the mastodon account migration dance. hopefully that didn't put too much load on meemu.org's whole situation D:
