I've been seeing a lot of articles lately about Starbucks closing lots of stores around the country; has anybody gone through and looked at correlations between which locations are being shut down and which locations have unionized? Just kinda curious, ya know?
Remember that time Israel planted bombs in a bunch of pagers and walkie talkies and then indiscriminately maimed and murdered a bunch of people it baselessly claimed were terrorists including multiple small children?
That's worth remembering, imo.

I've got some old hardware that I'd like to try to develop a custom ROM for. The ROM is, fortunately, on a chip that can just be pulled from its socket and replaced. I don't, however, know much about the architecture of the device; how the memory map works, how to handle its I/O etc. My hope is that I can dump the current ROM, decompile it, work out enough of an understanding of the commercial setup to make something crude for my own purposes, write that to a new chip, and pop it in.
I've never actually done anything like this. Some of y'all have, though! Maybe you can help me get started?
What do I need, in terms of both hardware and software, to dump the ROM?
What do I need to decompile it?
What do I need to replace the ROM?
... And in the darkness, bind it!
Wait, sorry, carried away there. But you've got the gist. Any books, web sites, people, etc. you can point me to for any of the steps I'll need to carry out would be very appreciated! I'm currently still bed-bound and recovering from surgery, so it's a great chance for me to do a bunch of reading.
Thanks! And boosts very welcome!

The existence of Rich Text implies the existence of Poor Text being systemically exploited for the benefit of a few selfish characters.
I'm fairly sure most folks I interact with would agree with the statement "LLMs cannot think." pretty uncontroversially. Here's a question for you, though: how do we feel about this statement?
"Brains cannot think."

This toot brought to you by whichever teen in my neighborhood threw their fancy vape in my yard for whatever reason. I've attained access to the pcb, but I currently can't see what's on it because it's all hidden under a huge capacitor. I know some vapes have reusable microcontrollers on board and I'm really hoping I got lucky here.
Ultimately the reason I never go through with it just boils down to wanting to learn alongside friends in-person, and not having that opportunity. Video chat shit exists these days and might could be a tolerable alternative, but... I dunno.
Thinking again about wanting to learn #Esperanto (a thing I've been thinking about for over a quarter century at this point without actually doing), and imo the single best argument in favor of learning Esperanto is to be able to talk to... the kinds of people who go to the effort of learning Esperanto.
Reminder that abolishing ICE, the cops, the military, etc. is not the end goal. It's not the end of the conversation.
It's the beginning.
We can't begin to talk about what a society of free people looks like with the world's arsenal against our collective head.
The heat index here is 118° today. Forgive me for prioritizing literally any reduction in carbon emission over your mild convenience.
Listening to my coworkers taking about their use of LLMs for trivial bullshit while gazing out my window at the butterflies and thinking, "this is what they've sacrificed you for."
(It's me. I'm the one who says that.)
One of my faves is Henry the Pole-Vaulting Fish, an immortal fish who lives in Wakulla Springs in North Florida and famously "pole vaults" by swimming over an underwater pole near the springhead.
Increased pollution in recent decades has made the previously crystal-clear waters of the spring too murky and they no longer run the glass-bottomed boat tours, so most children nowadays will never be able to witness Henry... but he's still there.
(And some say that one day he'll have his revenge on those who have befouled his home.)

Does anybody have any articles or posts, etc. describing the origins and history of #GoblinWeek? I'm very curious whence it comes.
We need to bring back streetcars. We need Mr. Rodger's trolleys up in this society.
I'm calling it: 2024 is the Year of Lew.
