Turns out one of the many things that makes the Federation neat is that you can use other front ends for your Mastodon posts. Many of these are easy to set up on your own server, or run in your browser (so you're not sharing data with other sites).

I like using Phanpy, but there's also Elk, and bunches of other iOS, Android, or Desktop applications you can use.

There's a whole buffet of options available to you. You don't have to eat just the salad because it's the first thing they offer.

Here’s something I wasn’t worried about, up until last month: the San Francisco Unified School District using taxpayer dollars to do business with an AI company that records and uses my child’s voice to train largely untested technology, scale their business, and make millions for shareholders off unsuspecting parents and kids. I wish that password managers had a "strict" mode, where passwords could be suggested by full URL first, then the domain.

I have more than a few apps hosted where I use a different set of credentials. The login for "music" is not the same as the login for "notes" or "home". It'd be nice to not have to scroll through a huge list to find the right credentials.

Build a bunch on the ground. They only use solar power, use radiative cooling, and communicate using whatever radio you're planning on using. Hell, the cooling and comms should be worlds easier to do. Replace a bunch of your existing data centers with them and have them run for five years without any maintenance or service, only to switch off and degrade into harmless components that are absorbed back into the carbon cycle.

Back in college, I had a Systems Architecture and Design professor. The very first day of his class he stood up in front of us and said:

"One day, you're going to be brought in to help optimize a company. You'll see that they're doing things by using index cards in shoeboxes. Then, after you understand their processes, points of interaction, and audits, you'll find out that the most optimal way for them to work is by using index cards in shoe boxes. Walk away."

That was one of the best bits of advice I ever got in my career. Why? Because it reinforced that in order to solve a problem, you have to understand the problem. You have to understand how the problem fits into it's larger ecosystem. You have to understand what the solution breaks and what problems it will cause. Nothing lives in isolation. Everything is interconnected.

The last thing you do as a systems architect is write code.

I wish like hell more folk understood that, particularly the vibe-coding, rapid iteration, "throw code at it" types.
