I am pretty sure you can ignore anything the young turks have to say

and even if you knew nothing about them, the clickbait headline

"WARNING SIGNS of Impending Nuclear Strike" should clue you in

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@i0null/117338930353844670

I am always astonished that programmers, people who are supposed to be really really conscious of logic and math, post numbers not corrected for inflation

wtf ????

RE: https://expressional.social/@JamesAkers/117335239180911224

on the one hand, as Bertrand Russell pointed out, hobbies are very important for human happiness

but on the other hand, so many of our hobbies consume a lot of energy or other things bad for the enviroment

I really have no idea , at all, what the solution is

RE: https://social.vivaldi.net/@SteveFoerster/117272866407795544

just me
posts like this should have a content warning along the lines of
"yet another post on how bad the GOP is"

also both WaPo and Rawstory are shitty fucking sources, surely we can do better

yeah, I am not nice guy, so fucking shoot me

Your reminder that modern science is indeed sometimes miraculous

but also, AI has truly revolutionary potential to help many many people

so every time you say any AI is bad, you are being super ableist

This post from @jblue makes me a lot madder then I should be, because there is so much clickbait like this, amazing heart warming stories about sciencetific advances posted by people who know nothing about the real science

in this case, no the teen did not invent a way to remove microplastic from the enviroment in any realistic way outside of a lab

and that is obvious to anyone who has spent time reading the scientific literature in this area

RE: https://mastodon.world/@chiamaluca/117264777318502622

I must see a dozen or more posts more or less like this every day

and I am a very grouchy old guy, so quite possible I don't get this at all

but

And while I understand the need to vent, aside from venting, I don't really get the point of this sort of post

the many people who post this sort of thing, "explaining" how bad trump is, do they think anyone disagrees with them here ? that they will change any minds ?

RE: https://techfieldday.net/@sfoskett/117264391265870486

I agree with Stephen, as it is clear that post WWII liberalism is failing in many countries

one can blame the ultra rich, the radical religious right, etc etc, but Murphy is talking about the same things that are in this book

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strangers_in_Their_Own_Land

The US uses over 300 billion gallons a day

https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-much-water-used-people-united-states

so the water use by AI is not really an issue, overall, but maybe a serious issue locally

I was looking at this picture, and asked my self, why are insects so diverse ?

the answer it turns out maybe really simple:
Insects have been around for a long time - 400 million odd years, and this long period of time has allowed for evolution

in contrast, vertabrates are much more recent

many of the standard explanations - wings allow dispersal to new niches - don't appear to be true or that important
live and learn

If you are interested in teh US Canada "trade war" (quotes cause it is orange haired toddler nonsense) then far and away the best thing I have read is this

https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/adding-injury-to-insult-canada-edition?publication_id=277517&post_id=214867358&isFreemail=true&r=18wrbc&triedRedirect=true

summary: the US economy will suffer a surprising amount, but Canada will suffer more

but Americans are asked to suffer for no reason, while Canadians are asked to suffer for patriotism

RE: https://social.vivaldi.net/@SteveFoerster/117122127130309215

to me, the most interesting part of this article is:

hedge funds nearly doubled their Treasury holdings and now own 8.5 percent of the market, more than the top three sovereign investors — Japan, Britain and China — combined.

because here on mastodon, we often hear how foreigners own the US cause they own a lot of US gov't debt and it just isn't so

Did ANYONE actually bother to read the paper ? (below)

it is a theoretical study and IMO the scary headline from futurism is just clickbait

@connynasch
@jaystephens
@thisislieven
@dagb

here we have a typical thing about how great some new tech for renewable energy is

https://spectrum.ieee.org/gravity-energy-storage-will-show-its-potential-in-2021

From Jan 2021

did this ever pan out, or was it just another technology that turned out not to be cost effective or practical on a large scale, or not cost effective compared to some newer tech ?

#Climatechange #Solar #Wind #Renewableenergy

This aljazeera story from
@CanvasesByPeter

made my BS radar ping a little, as 60 million is a LOT for a primary

It turns out that 60 million is about right, and Stevens outspent El-Sayed by about 9:1

however, the phrase "$60 million+ the israeli lobby spent" seems imprecise if not anti semitic; about half of htat is AIPAC and the other half is from various sources

Mastodon etiquette question

if your handle is "Sick Cunt Dracones" do you need a content warning for your name ?

RE: https://discuss.systems/@ricci/116994935277483201

kind of sad how mastodon, supposedly a bastion of free thought that opposes the techno fascists, doesn't amplify this more

almost like all that AI hate talk is just cosplay

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@celesteh/116941627722842636

if you and I are around in 20 or 30 years (very unlikely for me) then it will be so much fun to hear the kids say

AI is fine, it is part of what I do in a organic way, but this new tech is bad, it takes away the human element and makes us slaves to computers

I have no idea what this new tech will be, but am pretty sure it will in fact be created

@bibliolater gives us a scary politico article
https://www.politico.eu/article/bank-of-england-andrew-bailey-warn-ai-uk-recession/

"A price correction in AI stocks, driven by a change in productivity and profitability among tech-led companies, could cause a 2.2 percent fall in U.K. GDP, the Bank warned in its financial stability report today."

eg a fall in the US stock market causes recession in the UK
if you read the actual BoE report
https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/-/media/boe/files/financial-stability-report/2026/financial-stability-report-july-2026.pdf

there doesn't seem to be any qualificatons on that 2.2%

is 2.2% likely ? what is the range ?

and the report is long, and has a lot of stuff and LOL the most hideous graphics I have ever seen , true eyesores

my parents left a small trust for my disabled bother*
I am the admin of the trust
which has been ok

but the real story here: under trump, the trust, invested in the stock market, has done very very well

and I would conjecture that rich people, who are, by and large, the only people with any real money in the stock market** love trump cause their wealth has increased and they really care only about that

*the way we treat disabled people in this country is a abomination
Also to anyone who is caring for a disable person: Give yourself a big pat on the back, cause you deserve it

**I forget the exact number, but roughly the richest 15% of households own 80% of all stocks
