So, do people an old-school Atari computer would work for things like word processing and maybe email? Because it looks like that OS is so old, an LLM wouldn't know what to do with it, and so uncool, a fascist wouldn't suck it into nostalgia.
Asking for a friend.
More hot takes: an economy that's driven by consumer spending is pretty much destined to consolidate power with corporations. Add in a weakening regulatory framework, and really, it's a wonder that the oligarchs took as long as they have to ruin our lives.
And yes, I know this person. This is a classic case of retaliation in response to organizing. Here's a video that has more of the story.

Boston University wrongfully dismissed a Black Ph.D. candidate while they were homeless, while allowing white graduate students to graduate with no interference in the English Department. Please sign this petition in support of the student's reinstatement.

There are so many organizations making ICE's depredations possible, and Signature Aviation is one of them. If you're interested in letting them know what you think of them, sign up to show up in Lexington in October and November.

People were talking about the temptation of AI today. I'm on a different planet. I just see grift after grift over something that can't do addition.
Crypto grifts, I get. Money laundering vehicles need to be creative. Spicy autocorrect? Just, no.
If you were tutoring adults who could read but hadn't done much of it, which books would you suggest? Assume intellectual curiosity, but possibly somewhere between a third to sixth grade level of exposure.
Books should not be long, but they could be fiction or non-fiction. PLEASE, no self-help books.
N.K. Jemisin: "The AI [we have] today is a glorified plagiarism machine."
(At the #Boston Public Library right now.)
Truth.
Between Anthropic's IPO docs essentially telling people not to miss out on the Armageddon Machine and their idiot researcher who is also promising Armageddon while also denying climate change, Anthropic is clearly marketing to both the death cultists and the YOLO-FOMO crowd. Excuse me: the cultists and doomers with money.
The correction is coming--this is not a discussion--and I'm a little leery of how badly this particular crowd is going to take it. Stock up on chamomile for them?
I keep looking at AI and thinking that it's promising the same things object oriented programming was "supposed" to do, only people are taking the claims much more seriously. People seem to have become more credulous over three decades, not more critical.

Before you use AI to "create" a song 🙄 or ask chatGPT for information you could track down yourself, spare a thought for the places where those data centers are. (And while you're at it, maybe also start thinking about the places where all of those minerals that make this go are being mined...)
What is behind the recent spate of AI- and LLM stans on fediverse this week? I'm not interested in engaging in a weird, strawman argument that positions people like me as having a blanket anti-technology orientation--yes, there's been a lot of blocking--but I am curious about why. It doesn't seem organic, let's just put it that way.
and that’s *before* we even start to discuss whether it’s “useful” (I am, frankly, still not convinced it is. yes even for code)
the trouble with using LLMs for anything FOSS (and I mean, anything not-FOSS, too) is that there simply is no neutral way to use LLMs, it will always be a tool built on theft, and if you don’t think that is compromising then I don’t know what to tell you
For the love of the world we still have, STOP SHARING AI-GENERATED IMAGES. Your critiques of fascism are actually not a good enough reason to perpetuate slop.
If you just can't help yourself, at least have the decency to note that it's an AI-generated image. (You know, in the alt-text?) Then your audience can decide if they want to remain just that.
I'm going to meet fascism, the degradation of critical reasoning, and the corruption of the potential of technology with my skills in my community garden, which includes community organizing.
I'm not able to literally drag people out of office or change our tech infrastructure (don't tempt me...), but I am able to shore up our resources to get more people in our community fed. Maybe that's nothing, but it's something that I can actually do, and right now that is a big, big win.
Hey EU: that's so great that you're bringing Canada into the fold.
Now do #ukraine Otherwise you're letting us know that you are more afraid of Putin than Trump, and that's just a bad look.
I cannot donate to everyone from Gaza, and I'm very sorry about that. It's not just that I can't afford to, it's that when I try to donate, I frequently *can't* because of my card/credit union. As I said, I'm sorry about that.
What I do instead is donate to INARA https://inara.org/ They were founded in 2015 to respond to Syria when most people didn't give a damn about them. They have since expanded their work to Lebanon, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkiye, and Gaza.
I wish I could do more.
Why are there so many AI slop generated images on the weekend? Damn, I wish there was a filter for that
