Laparoscopic gall bladder removal is a very common surgery. Having fallopian tubes removed at the same time turned out to be a simple and quick additional procedure.
It took awareness (thanks NZ Herald / NYT), and asking (twice, the surgeon's office initially said they didn't do that procedure).
Let's get the word out to anyone you know with disused fallopian tubes and a pending abdominal surgery. It might be a life saver.
(This is all in 🇨🇦 also, so medical liability and cost concerns figure less prominently.)
Talking to a friend, whose mother died of ovarian cancer, brought up a recent NZ Herald/NYT article (gift link below).
FTA: " 'Ovarian cancer,' (Dr. Rebecca) Stone (Johns Hopkins) told her, is a misnomer. Nearly all ovarian cancers – and nearly all fatal ovarian cancers – are actually cancers of the fallopian tubes. The 20% or so that start in the ovaries are different, Stone said, and usually can be cured."
This friend was in for a laparoscopic gall bladder (due gall stones) removal this month and asked the surgeon, literally in the operating theatre, if he could remove her fallopian tubes at the same time (which, in this case, were no longer needed). The surgeon didn't usually do this procedure. He called in the resident gynecologist for a quick consult, and then did both the gall bladder and fallopian tube removal.
We met a group of Minnesotan lads who pulled ashore after making a 300km canoe trip to Moosonee. Apparently while camping the last night with the locals on Charles Island they were made to feel very welcome, and were apparently fed all the hot dogs they could eat.
If you are one of their friends or relatives, they made it in good shape, and are on the train to Cochrane. 🙂
I came to Moosonee looking forward to finding out who lives here and why. You could ask why of any 🇨🇦, to be fair. Today I feel like I have a bit of an idea.
We took a trip out to James Bay with Todd Rueben and learned heaps about not only traditional ways but how those have adapted and evolved with time.
I'm left feeling very impressed by this small community.
Enjoying a cool, but very quiet and pleasant evening in the northernmost Ontario 🇨🇦 town reachable by rail, Moosonee. Tomorrow, a boat trip to James Bay.
We arrived bit diasarrayed by a cell phone malfunction, but a friendly local helped us get in touch with our hosts. Turned out he was the former band CEO. Chi-miigwetch, Gary. Seems friendly is the norm here.
The work on the rail line is impressive. By next winter the whole trip up from Toronto will be by rail.
Vanta is celebrating #caturday in the apple blossoms. She's actually chasing bees, but we'll pretend she's just enjoying the sights and scents.😸
Saw @pluralistic this evening at the charming Type Books on Dundas West in the Toronto 🇨🇦 Junction district. Lovely store, but packed. I had to abandon ship to drive back home for bedtime (and before passing out from CO₂ build up) so didn't get my copy of Enshittification signed. 🙁 Next time...
