Big oof.
Switching away will be difficult, with the requirements we have and muscle memory already developed. But sheesh, holy fuck. We are now decidedly unexcited about the project and will preface every talk about Neovim with the disclaimer that they platform white supremacists.

Hey Fediverse.

A dear and close trans friend of ours and @cf is escaping an abusive natal family and household. A couple months ago, ey managed to escape and move in with a partner abroad who seemed safe, but quickly turned abusive, and now ey're at the end of eir means, having to decide between two abusive households, homelessness or, hopefully, figure out a different place with safety.

So, need to figure out: initial expenses, budget housing, job without language knowledge. Ideally: backup options for getting residence. Ey are an EU citizen, plan is to move to Germany.

Any advice on landing a job, budget housing, securing the legal side of things? Contact for orgs and people who have expertise in this? If you can, also consider throwing some money here to cover the expenses:

https://liberapay.com/arw (Stripe or PayPal)
https://ko-fi.com/arw_cf (Stripe or PayPal)

Unfortunately, out of consideration for eir safety, I have to avoid giving links to their socials and eir name. Ey are yet in the unsafe environment.

Boosts appreciated! :boost_love:

#FairScan is simply an amazing piece of software. It's an Android app for turning photos of documents into PDF files.

As somemany without a dedicated scanner and frequently on the go, it's a lifesaver. It genuinely makes really good scans in the overwhelming majority of the times. Its UI is dead simple: has only the bare minimum of necessary buttons. It does its job well and doesn't overstay its welcome: no extra menus to click through, no pop-ups, no notifications. You open the app, do a photo, save the scan.

It's not flashy, but it is nonetheless exciting. It is a feat of a lot of effort and care to reduce friction so much.

The Github thread is genuinely mind-boggling. I don't have words to comment on it. People just *begging* to feed them with more AI soup, and some guy advertising his fucking TikTok. What the fuck is even happening there.

Tailwind CSS CEO says he laid off 75% of the technical team, citing AI as the reason the business is losing revenue and sales: https://github.com/tailwindlabs/tailwindcss.com/pull/2388#issuecomment-3717222957

Tailwind CSS website, meanwhile, lists 7 AI companies as highest-tier support and provides AGENTS.md to individual donors: https://tailwindcss.com/sponsor

The CEO has been tweeting how amazingly well AI accelerates his coding, too. LOL

Btw, I'm thinking of changing the DNS name, but have no ideas. Suggestions welcome!

I've been in ever more exasperated state for the past few years about software, which is my passion. Feels really bad when you try and do your hobby, and then just *can't*, because it burned you out so much.

It occurred to me that I'll basically never start writing, which I wanted to start for a few years already, because I was being extremely stubborn about improving my website first, and that's for sure not happening with how little I want to do software.

So I wrote a little something about my experiences and thoughts, and what spurred this change of mind. Starting off with a wheeze, but hopefully it'll finish with a bang, eventually. Already writing further posts.

Today, I once again wake up worrying about #Rust 's future.

Why is a shitbag such as #dtolnay still allowed to single-handedly maintain fundamental libraries for the ecosystem? Why is he part of Library API team? How is he not permabanned for single-handedly permanently damaging Rust by killing off comptime reflection over his racism? How is he not permabanned for the power play he attempted to pull with his "RFC" after pushing pre-compiled binary to serde without notice? Why are MIC companies routinely tolerated at Rust conventions? Why does no one talk about it, despite the problems not being solved? Has #Ruby takeover taught people nothing? Will Rust survive another year without turning into #fashtech?

So many questions. I think about them every time I use Rust, which is often.

Apropos of nothing.

For everyone that is disappointed with #Calibre 's decision to introduce LLM bullshit, there's now a Rereading Project, which is going to maintain #Arcalibre, a sustainable fork. Read more about it here: https://wandering.shop/@xgranade/115691478523497546

I wish it was named Excalibre! But that aside, I think it's a good effort. Calibre was a BDFL project, and its author is not the most approachable person. His efforts in creating and maintaining Calibre are appreciated, but one-person systems are very fragile. Rereading Project has a very good mindset - starting with community and governance, instead of rushing headfirst to do code. That's a way chosen by such great projects as #Comaps and #Forgejo, and it pays off greatly.

Please give the project a boost, whether on Fedi, in discussions, or in code!

Recently, srid, Jon Ringer and other banned nazis have put out a voting guide. Needless to say, they advice voting for 100% fash candidates, while also making legendary comments such as "prioritizes community health over tech, BAD".

Fear not! There's now a good voting guide. Spread wide and far, folx! :boost_love:

Asked my fellow nerds where to migrate from #NixOS, considering it's being overtaken by fascists, and there's no realistic way out of it. Here's what they came up with.

- Desktop: Opensuse Tumbleweed. Fairly new packages, rolling release, atomic updates with easy rollbacks, thanks to package manager and BTRFS snapshots.
- Dotfile manager: Chezmoi. Natively integrates with Git, has templating, integration with secrets managers, age.
- Service management: Cockpit. Not declarative, but a GUI; I'll take it. Provides handle to all server ops: updating packages, managing systemd services, managing containers, etc.
- Fleet management: Kubernetes on Talos Linux. Needs decent hardware and multiple machines, and is somewhat complex, so you'll know if you need it.

Share your other suggestions! Let's help each other migrate from a fascist distro.

Was made aware of this thanks to marshmallow's post on the forums.

Founder of Anduril publically commented that people who don't want MIC overtake are "biased" and "fringe": https://xcancel.com/PalmerLuckey/status/1972037286192992320 (archive: https://archive.md/sWbsY ).

He KNOWS that Anduril is trying a corporate overtake. Tom Berek KNOWS who he is working for. SC was hiding Tom being employed by THIS company.

All masks are off now. We now have direct confirmation that Anduril is trying to overtake Nix community. Everyone who claims otherwise is supporting fascist overtake - conciously or not, we no longer have luxury to consider.

This amazing fella called Bruno is looking for a new house!

We picked him up near a highway in Tbilisi, while he was eating a loaf of bread. That's no proper cat life, so we took him in and provided him with friends and yums.

He's very friendly and caring, can live with dogs and cats alike, pretty playful.

Right now, he lives in #Berlin. Send me a message if you'd like to adopt!

To tell the truth, I am disappointed.

The Anduril incident last year was really bad. People were rightfully opposed to Anduril occupying more of the community space. It was important enough for SC candidates to be asked their opinions, and many of them rejected the idea outright, and some of them were wishy-washy on it.

And yet, somehow, it all came to a point where the SC doesn't see a serious problem in Anduril receiving a seat in the main governance body.

The Zulip discussion last year was focused around establishing SC, to get ultimate authority for governance, and to restore community trust. I think those goals were not achieved. SC has been very reactive on many issues in the past, and now it also makes mistakes and instead of acknowledging it, publishes dismissive responses.

I don't think this is working out. It also actively reduces my trust, because I've seen many people I trust vouch for many SC members, who didn't really deliver. Another election cycle will not fix this.

#NixOS #Nixpkgs #Nix

Sigh, so we've got an official SC response, here: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/statement-on-a-steering-committee-member-joining-anduril/69007

As the response correctly points out, there are two problems here: the failure to update on CoI and the Anduril employment.

CoI is a serious issue. Tom has informed the SC in advance - that's good! But SC has failed to inform the community. I'm not sure how a "living document" is relevant to that - SC provided many updates to the community via Discourse. A Discourse post would be perfectly fine here, too. The response doesn't address why the post was never made, though?

For Anduril employment, though... Anduril sponsoring NixCon last year has contributed to community split. An open letter was written, and many prolific contributors (including present SC members) commented against Anduril: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/should-organizations-relating-to-the-defense-sector-being-able-to-sponsor-nixos/41252?u=kfearsoff

Furthermore, when running for SC, there was a question about MIC sponsorships. Many rejected them. So I don't think it's unreasonable to expect SC members to have a problem with Anduril.

#NixOS #Nix #Nixpkgs

Sigh, so apparently Tom Berek of Steering Committee is now working for Anduril. You know, that same Anduril that caused an open letter denouncing MIC sponsoring community events. I don't see how it's acceptable for SC members to work for Anduril, especially in the wake of the whole, you know...

The failure to provide an update to his conflict of interest (and two SC members stating their personal opinions that they don't see much of an issue) is a breach of trust. This means, once again, that the community has to organize by themselves, and demand accountability from people in power. To this end, please spread this information far and wide, and give @nyanbinary a hug. And go support your local #Lix and #Aux representatives.

And now, after this doomer post about government policies, it's time to ask for donations.

Honestly - better donate to trans people to escape US. Go speak to your local cat volunteering and ask what they need. Donate to an independent individual creator. Chances are, that will be a better money spending than a donation to an org in a country with far-right illegitimate government. But shh, no snitching that I ever said that.

But if you still want to donate for our cause specifically - well, I don't have a personal donation page, so donate to an org I'm part of instead: https://catebi.ge/en/#donation

And also, consider that money isn't the only way to help. I consider myself extremely useless - and somehow I'm able to help with my tech skills. So schedule a weekend to contact your local volunteering orgs - and perhaps you'll find that you're exactly the one they were looking for. Perhaps you'll make a world of a difference by doing 10% of what you normally do at work. 7/7

I'm not a "real" volunteer in our org - I just help build up the technical infrastructure, and just happen to help cats when I can. Still, it's immensely stressful and taxing - and our volunteers do this sometimes full-time every spring.

Unfortunately, even with our efforts to sterilize street cats and find human homes for kittens, we are fighting against a massive tide. Without government finance, social campaigning and legislation support, we are merely reducing the damage by absorbing the cost.

Government support is unlikely to happen due to the far-right turn, but thankfully, the society starts changing ever so slightly. 6/7
