Ondřej Surý _literally_ keeping the internet afloat today.
Anybody know if he's on the ole Fedi so I can send him my love?

Just wanted to add the hashtag
#SoftwareAsService because I _think_ it might be a meaningful thesis for Maddie's whole thread here.

(I'm seeing this hastag used elsewhere as a shorthand for SaaS and that's _not at all_ what I mean. I _literally_ mean making software as a way of _serving_ our fellows.)

This _entire_ thread is worth your time. @MaddieM4 nails the often completely avoided emotional and moral concerns with putting a thing out into the world. She doesn't use the phrase but I would politely suggest this thread is about _craftsmanship_. It's about understanding the need that you're serving and the fit of the thing you're making to serve the need.
Serving our fellows is one of the _highest_ callings a person can have. Maddie may be inadvertently defining _Software As Service_.
Holy shit did these devs go _out_ of their way to cover a huge number of accessibility issues, phobias, misophonias, etc.
Fucking kudos, devs. The attention to this _type_ of detail is lovely.
Ah, apparently I _just_ finished the (in hindsight) very short tutorial. Noice.
A'ight nerds, I'm about 15 minutes into Abiotic Factor as a solo player and... It's already delightful. The art style is a low-res but definitely already conveys the careless corpo-science vibe they're going for in the starter area.
I know _nothing_ about this game and I'm going to keep it that way. I've read that there's _so much_ to spoil that I don't want to know.
I just wanted to say I'm already enjoying the _feel_ of the game and I'm just getting started.
Take your fucking kids to see a psychiatrist if you can afford it. Maybe even if you _can't_.
I'm almost 50 years old and in hindsight _every_ single part of my life has been _far_ harder than it had to be.
Please take your kids to see a psychiatrist.

So, I finally got an ADHD diagnosis about a month ago and today is day... Two on meds.
I'm already reading about other programming languages for the first time in ... Years... And spending meaningful time on code-reviews at work.
It's day TWO and I'm interested again. I still spent a lot of time screwing around today but... It didn't feel quite so much like a need or a compulsion but more like a _habit_ that can be untrained.
Already.
Day TWO with meds.

I guess my point is this:
If you can't be bothered to put in the effort, ahead of time, to organize your thoughts then in what fucking world do you believe I'll think it's worth _my_ time to listen to you stumble through the first draft of them as they fall from your face-hole?
Yeah, organizing your thoughts is _work_. Don't make _your_ work _my_ work.
If time matters, and mine does to me, fucking act like it.
These are core/underlying issues with either the game or the design philosophy at HelloGames.
I _want_ to like NMS so much and I just cannot get there.
It's all the more disheartening because it _feels_ wildly close to _the_ thing I'd love.
Soooooo close.
M'kay, I've tried. I try with almost _every_ update.
No Man's Sky will _not_ love me the way I want and I cannot love it the way it deserves.
So much _almost_ in this beast.
No, hauling slip-sliding stuff _on_ not _in_ the flat-bed of a Colossus isn't _fun_. No, a static 3 minute timer to get salvage off a deep-space wreck isn't _fun_.
No, the pay-off isn't _there_.
Dozens of systems that never quite reach each other. No cross-over between them, no emergent gameplay.
Also, my boys have the sense of humor of a 57 year old pipe-fitter.
It's amazing to watch in action.
The youngest just sent a video of himself pushing a dolly down an empty paved walk and added:
So, I says to 'em, "Work'n hard or hardly work'n?"
🤌
So, I'm constantly caught off guard when the wife fails to recognize Tilda Swinton in a movie.
I think she's rather distinctive and additionally she made a big impression on me in `The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.` I mentioned this to my wife.
...
Fedi.
FEDI.
She's never _seen_ `The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.`
I...
How...?
I'm not saying you have to buy into the psuedo-Christianity of the thing but... You... You've never _seen_ it?
For how?!
I _love_ talking people out of writing code. The _thinking_ is the work. The _code_ is the literal codification of an idea. The _work_ was having the idea and refining the idea to the simplest model possible.
I do not find a lot of folks who share my type of reasoning about software and development.
Somehow the folks who used to _enjoy_ writing code now want the random-word-generator to write their code.
They don't want to think, or write. What the hell is it the want to do?
I keep re-discovering that I don't write code for the same reason as a lot developers I encounter.
A lot of folks seem to enjoy _writing_ code. I do not like writing code. It _is_ a great way to solve certain problems though and I absolutely _love_ solving problems.
This leaves me in a position where I'll often argue against adding a feature. Not because I don't want to write it but because it doesn't _solve_ a problem. It usually relocates or obfuscates a problem.
Almost _all_ the cost of software is in the future. That's part of why _any_ new feature is alluring. It _appears_ inexpensive from here. Turns out the cost is just unknown.
YAGNI (you aren't gonna need it) doesn't just apply to functions, methods, or classes. It applies to entire feature sets that sound neat, fun, or interesting. Someone has to maintain that shit for the lifespan of the software unless it's explicitly deprecated which simply doesn't happen, in my experience.
"Wash, tell me I'm pretty."
Whyfor managers that have no administrative skills or inclination become managers?
What... What do they think managing... Is?
Now, Main-Plot-Mover-Man is in the clutches of the enemy while he managed to get _one_ MacGuffin into Former-Nun's hands on her way out the "disclosable" data is still with him and likely captured by nameless baddies.
...
It's like a really long, really _bad_ episode of NCIS or CSI: Miami or something.
So bad. Stephen Spielberg directed this. John _muthafuk'n_ Williams scored this.
What the fuck are we doin' here, people?
