Version control is about being able to reason about a codebase under change
If you’re making 30,000 merges/day you’re beyond needing to reason about your codebase
I’m exhausted, I have an impossibly long to do list and multiple, conflicting deadlines looming. So, there’s only one thing to do: roll up my sleeves, and open Mastodon.
There are many big things to freak out about right now, but don’t forget to freak out about the little things too
It just got worse. On the next episode of Tiny House Nation, the lady was looking at an 800 square foot two bedroom "tiny" house.
They're clearly just running out of tiny houses to film these episodes. Similar to how My Lottery Dream Home is now "My Mom Died so I'm Buying a House with my Inheritance" or Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, which should now be called "Normal Restaurants that Guy Fieri visited."
I'm not trying to be difficult, really, but when I'm asked "why didn't you make this photo in color?", they might as well ask "why wasn't this rendered as a sculpture?" or "why didn't you write a poem?". They're all just different media.
I love getting right wing voter's guides in the mail. I use them to check my ballot for errors.
A little flexibility goes a long way. Trees bend in the wind, people change their minds, and occasionally a shopping trolley develops a strong preference for the left. Learn from this and adapt. #gooderliving
Venmo, but for sending each other burritos.
Today’s challenge: The Department of Unfinished Business has accidentally completed something. Nobody knows what it was, but there is a small brass band outside and a senior official named Brenda is insisting that everyone remain calm. Draft the incident report. #gooderliving
I've been saying since the 2000s that it's important that every big software stack have at least one angry new software grad to fight back against entrenched complexity in the existing codebase.
sometimes there is a good reason why we can't "just do X, Y, or Z" but someone should be still raising the question, damn it

"Open models have real benefits. Do they outweigh the risks?"
tl/dr: risks are
oligarchs don't get to rent them
you can't be spied on
software you develop with them can't be mined to train proprietary and private models you don't even get access to
An alarming proportion of adulthood consists of making decisions with incomplete information and hoping nobody asks for a PowerPoint presentation explaining the reasoning. #gooderliving
the mass production of part of software development has largely been abstracted, automated, standardized away: distribution of boundlessly replicable bit-perfect copies of software over the internet. that gives us the illusion that more automation is needed, since the remaining work seems manual by comparison. but you can’t and shouldn’t automate it; it’s design, feedback loops, thinking, creating, problem solving; all very irregular, reactive, and unpredictable types of work
