Benjamin Perley Poore was an early American political journalist. Born in 1820, he was an active Washington correspondent from 1854 to 1887. Among other things he founded the Gridiron Club, a society of elite political reporters that still exists today.
Published the year before he died, the "Reminiscences" is basically him taking the chance to write down every wild story he'd ever heard.
It's a work in two volumes, and the best stories are all in the first one, covering stuff that happened when he was young. I don't know if that is a consequence of him not wanting to burn bridges with people he actually knew, or if Washington was just more fun in the antebellum days. But the stories in the first volume are great.
Let me tell you a few of them.
