Moroccan dinosaur’s fearsome tail spikes evolved much earlier than we thought – new discovery

These fossils show that this ankylosaur was covered in spikes. These spikes were not just part of the outer covering; some were fused directly to its skeleton.

The findings also show that the tail weapons characteristic of ankylosaurs evolved much earlier than scientists had previously believed.

The research also suggests that ankylosaur armour may have served a dual purpose early in the group’s evolutionary history: as a defensive shield and as a means of display.

The tail: defence and display

Spicomellus had a stiffened tail with fused vertebrae. This likely served as a defensive shield against predators. Its body spikes added protection and made it a formidable target.

These features push back the origin of ankylosaur tail weapons by millions of years. This evidence shows that complex defensive adaptations evolved much earlier than previously thought.

The tail and armour may also have functioned in display or social signalling. So, defence and communication may have shaped its evolution.

More words: The fact the US stock market hasn't had a panic attack and went to hide in the basement is something that has confused many very smart people. Right now hope is fueling the market. Sometimes that hope is for big money. Other times its hope that this one weird trick will work this time. Right now we're very much in a "one weird trick will work this time" market, so every time Trump says, "the oil will flow," prices go up. When he says "the bombs will flow" prices go down, but not as much because people know he'll says "oil will flow" in a few days.

There is a robust set of bottom-buyers out there, many of them algorithmic, who buy when the market drops a lot. Since Trump is Mr. Volatility, those buy-the-dip strategists have been doing that a lot. If you look at the last 6 months, there haven't been many cases of 3+ day slides across the broad indexes; these bottom buyers are part of it.
