I haven’t ridden a bike today. But I have worked on my relationship with my significant other, read and commented on a much-improved chapter, provided development review feedback for a colleague and attended to some casework. Also I done a wash and hung to dry cleaned a bike and fixed a flat tyre (tubed not tubeless). Oh and made my daughter breakfast and cooked my own lunch (an omelette).

Will that do?

Think I may be better but now I dress like an ice cream. First proper ride on tubeless tyres and deeply impressed. Got quite warm but needed a neck warmer for the first bits.

And that includes Greens who should know better. University management are an easy target and have made lots of mistakes. But their behaviour is symptomatic not causal and the problem sits with politicians who set the fiscal and immigration context under which they operate.

I’m seeing a lot of left wing politicians blaming the crisis in UK Higher Education on those in charge of Universities in solidarity with this that work in them. Whilst it may be that some Universities in the UK have engineered their own problems here is a sobering quote from the OECD: “In Chile, only 47% of tertiary education expenditure comes from government sources, and in the United Kingdom, it is just 43%, the lowest across OECD and partner countries with data”.

(The US spends, for example, about four times as much public money relative to GDP as we do on Higher Education BTW, twice as much if you include R and D spend).

That’s a governmental choice, driving the whole show. Combined with the cap on home UG fees and an unfriendly visa regime this isn’t a sustainable model for students or providers.

Last week I did the first live performance of my live coding + DJing project at Threading in Malmö. The project is inspired by The Belleville Three who would use drum machines to mix between tracks at parties in the 1980s.

There were a few rough moments, like having two layers of 808s on a massive sound system provided an amount of bass, but I'm overall really happy with how it all went.

I sadly didn't record the performance but I'll be making some clips to share in the future.
