Just a quick follow-up:

The cheapest PS5 is $599. Playstation Plus is $79.99 per year for the cheapest tier, and that is the only way you can play games online.

If you pay yearly for Playstation Plus your 5 year total cost of ownership is: $998.95
If you pay per-quarter for Playstation Plus your 5 year TCO is: $1158.80
If you pay per-month for Playstation Plus your 5 year TCO is: $1258.40

This all assumes Playsation Plus doesn't increase in price in the next 5 years.

People complaining about the Steam Machine price don't seem to understand that:

1. Valve is not subsidizing the computer
2. The computer is not locked down like a traditional console. You do not need to pay a monthly or yearly fee in order to play your games online
3. The Steam store consistently has the best sales on the market
4. The computer has access to every game in my library that can run on the hardware, as does any computer that runs Steam
5. Valve will not charge you an upgrade fee per game when the Steam Machine 2 is released
6. The cost to build an equivalent PC is slightly less, yes, but you literally cannot build a PC that has the same form factor as the Steam Machine. Mini-ITX is still bigger than the Steam Machine. The difference is huge. I could not fit a Mini-ITX computer in my TV room, I could fit a Steam Machine in my living room

If you consider only points 2 & 3 above, the lifetime cost of owning a Steam Machine is probably on par with the lifetime cost of owning any other console.

The company that hired this man also hired a large overseas contractor to build two different products at the same time, and then didn't meet with the company to provide any kind of oversight for about 2 years. They were then delivered two different products that did not work. They literally couldn't even start the applications. They then hired a pile of people, I was one, to take over the mess. I was told that on release day we could expect to have about 200k users. The software fell over if more than 60 people used it. On launch day they had less than 20 users. They killed the project a few months after release. This is the software industry in a nutshell.

I once worked with a guy that was a "principal engineer" who one day bragged to another coworker that he wrote all of the tests for his branch with Bash. When asked why he did that, since his team had been using PyTest, he said he couldn't figure it out. When asked if he read the PyTest docs he said he had not, and that he shouldn't have to read the docs to get it to work. The industry is chock full of these guys, and I think they're a large reason why LLMs have become so popular with software developers.

Recently, the guy in Massachusetts that has my name has signed up for the state lottery with my email address and also for some kind of subsidized internet service. Previously his high school students would send me their papers to grade.

Years ago I got countless emails from some wireless carrier in Quebec because some guy with my name signed up for a cell phone with my email address. After getting a hundred emails in French I finally contacted their support line and told them it was the wrong email. You'd think after they resolved that he would have learned his lesson.

This means that someone is either trying to compromise my account, or one of the two fucking idiots who think my email address is their email address (and is constantly signing me up for shit) keeps trying to sign into their Microsoft account with my email address.

I have a really specific request, hoping Fedi can help! I'm in the market for a new pair of earbuds for working out and doing yard work (mostly mowing my lawn with an electric mower).

I am interested in the Beyerdynamic Amiron 200's, but I can't find any reviews. Do you have a pair? Do you like them? How do they compare to other headphones you've experienced?

Related question: Have you used "open ear" earbuds while doing tasks like mowing a lawn with an electric mower? Is that reasonably possible without cranking the volume so high that I damage my ears? Or do I really need to go with an in ear earbud? I struggle with in ear stuff as they all irritate my ear canal. I'm looking for earbuds because over ear headphones are way too uncomfortable to wear during the summer while doing yard work, or while working out.

Boosts welcome, but please only reply if you have actual experience, not speculation. Assume I am already knowledgeable about headphones, I have 4 pairs I regularly use that vary in price from ~$150 to ~$1,000 USD, I am really only looking for a specific answer to my problem.

If you were given a code review, and it was about 3,000 lines to look at, how long do you think it would take you?

Even if you generate your dependencies by telling an LLM to reproduce the API of some popular library you now have an imitation of that library. Maybe it's perfect. Maybe it's not. Even if it's a perfect replica, if a CVE is discovered in the dependency you copied you're not going to be alerted, and you're not going to be able to just bump the version you depend on to get the fix.

Your dependencies will also stagnate. You're not focused on developing them, you're focused on developing your product. You're not going to benefit from the new things added to future versions of the dependency that you just copied. You may miss out on new features that make your codebase easier to use, more performant, or easier to maintain.

I've been reducing the amount of dependencies that my work projects have every year. I plan on continuing to reduce the amount of dependencies we have. There isn't a world where I'm going to just start having an LLM fabricate them for me instead. I'm just reducing the need for dependencies. I don't want to suddenly have to maintain them myself.

There's a lot of evidence out there that LLMs just pickle some folks brains, but this whole "We don't need dependencies anymore we'll just use LLMs to produce everything" is probably the biggest sign I've seen. I've seen this argument from at least three distinct people now, and I just don't know how you could come to that result, even if LLMs were perfect there's still one million reasons why you'd want dependencies.

Would PEP 827 make it easier to correctly type Django models? If so I say approve this post haste.
