A keyboard layout recommendation!

For the last couple of years I've been using the EurKEY layout, which its author describes as a "layout for Europeans, Coders and Translators".

It uses a qwerty/US keyboard base layout (so nothing exotic, easy-ish to try out and adopt) and then packs in dozens of nicely accessible key combinations for a number of ~european languages and specific usecases like coding, translating and "more elaborate writing". :)

I love this layout because it provides coding specific keys (~{}[]@# etc.) in convenient locations while letting me type english, dëütßch \o/, français, español, etc. without switching layout, and it also enriched my typing with stuff that I would otherwise hardly/never type due to lazyness: ×÷€„“…«»º. It also gives you LLM super-powers without planetary and societal destruction – yes, that was an em-dash¹!

The layout can be used on all major platforms (see its website), under Linux it sometimes comes pre-installed (just need to choose it in the settings), sometimes as an extra package.

The other month I left my full time job, partly due to feeling bored and burnt out, partly due to a bunch of AI nonsense, and partly because I wanted to work on building electronics and selling synthesizers.

Well this is one of the synthesizers.

Called Ouroboros, because it's primarily a feedback instrument (how original), and this is still in the prototyping stage where the circuit design is pretty much all done but I need to figure out a better enclosure, how to make it robust, and how to make it feasible to build so I can sell them.

I'll probably be shouting about this a bit more over time.

tl;dr: Dedicated TOTP hardware recommendations anyone?

I'd like to use TOTP-based 2FA for some services that don't support FIDO tokens.

For some time I did this with TOTP applications on another device (laptop or fallback smartphone in the drawer), but found it cumbersome to boot up and shut down an entire OS for every 2FA login.

Therefore, I'd love to get a dedicated TOTP hardware thingy, and am looking for pointers/recommendations! Which one(s) should I look at and why?

Ok, I've got a few friends who are epileptic and who I think would really enjoy algoraves except I daren't invite them because of the prevalence of flashing lights.

Visuals are live coded, so we can't just ask people not to make dramatic blinks, as live coding is inherently serendipitous, with unexpected results. Flashes are inevitable at the point of the HDMI output port.

However, I wonder if there might be additional options to increase accessibility. Our normal practice is to plug directly into a projector, but I think we could have an intermediate filter that detects the kind of value changes that are like to trigger a seizure and can fade them more slowly. Does something like this exist off the shelf?

Is there a way to add this kind of filter to web based languages so web pages can optionally operate in a safe mode?

I'm not saying "no strobes ever" but it would be extremely good of we could say "no strobes sometimes."

First it closes his book and clearly he felt it was important, but as far as I know 'social dancing' is completely absent from computer music/electroacoustic education institutions that otherwise laud Stockhausen. I got a statement from Paul Murphy's office that confirmed that "[these] are indeed wild statements made by Malcolm Byrne and do not reflect the views of the AI committee. [...] much of the committee is very critical of such statements and the government's general disregard of the consequences of AI implementation and replacement of critical roles in society."

These statements by Mr Byrne do need to be seen as an abuse of power in the role of the Chair of the Committee, and we must continue to trust in the proceedings of Oireachtas Committees.

Skoda developed (with the University of Salford) an all-mechanical bicycle bell that bypasses active noise cancellation (ANC) in headphones.

It's tuned to 750hz, which is a "blind spot" in most ANC headphone processing.
There is also a resonator for a higher frequency, and the hammer produces irregular strikes, confusing the ANC further, and making pedestrians look behind them faster.

Unplanned release tonight that I'm very happy about: Sicuit ("see-coo-it") - the minimal plaintext password store (https://simonrepp.com/sicuit/) that I re-implemented in Rust and Sequoia PGP (previously: C99/GPGme) last October - is now at version 0.11.0.

The release includes two fixes I had queued for a long time already, plus dependency updates for sequoia and the possibility to build with different cryptographic backends for those who like to build themselves (https://codeberg.org/simonrepp/sicuit/src/branch/main/CHANGELOG.md).

Most importantly though I was able to find and resolve a packaging-related problem that I couldn't wrap my head around previously: I realized that sequoia, with the default nettle cryptography backend, does not support Debian 12 (which was my previous build target and apparently caused runtime issues that I long couldn't figure out), so I now built 0.11.0 for Debian 13, and the thing runs perfectly well on all my devices now. \o/

Which is to say, I can now confidently recommend giving sicuit a try if you're interested! And I'll probably look into an rpm and AUR release soon, now that this seems to be working well. :)
