oh there are a lot of film photographers here... is there a good way for me to go about cleaning/restoring a photo thats likely from the 90s? its been kept in an acrylic display stand type frame, and earlier today i took the photo out so i could clean the frame without getting the photo wet, and some areas of the photo were stuck down to the front acrylic. they came off without damage, but i see that the areas that were not stuck are a bit matte and almost dusty, and the areas that were stuck are glossy.

attached is a pic of the back, maybe with id info on the kind of photo it is, and a close pic of an area of the photo with glossy and matte surfaces as an example.

its a pretty important photo to me, actually the only one i display in my apartment, and i know a good next step is to see if the negative is available for a new and/or archival quality print to frame and preserve properly. but if theres a best way to clean this one, id like to!

Would any of y'all be interested in an archival curation tool that can handle merging large collections of files?

I'm in the middle of designing something — git is inspiration but the wrong tool for this job — but that allows reintegrating diverged collections of materials, and propagating enough information that if you were to merge two folders, you'd get a relevant set of questions about the contents to successfully and meaningfully merge them.

It's aware of the fact that embedded metadata changes.

My goal is to make a library simple enough that one could embed it in an operating system's file browser to surface intelligent behavior, and that it could form the basis of media servers too, taking the scanning-and-recording-files duties.

They wrote up a design doc at the URL below. The gist of it is that they chose a fixed size and error correction level, then unrolled the whole encoding process into a finite circuit, and implemented RS encoding as a linear transformation over GF(2). In effect this is similar to what you'd do in digital circuit design, or mapping an algorithm to a secure multiparty computation implementation.

Long ago, in the time before, one of my uncles did a series of paintings with rubber cement and some kind of coloring and holy crap the house must have smelled so so bad but the paintings are just really good.

yeah this would be less a "weather" app in the fun sense and more of a habitat dashboard in the grim sense.

Features that would be ideal:

- approximate wet bulb calculation
- open and shut your windows alarms for heat, smog, etc.
- unplug the computer alarm for storms
- plug the computer back in reminder
- configurable too damned hot calendar event, to not schedule errands for pain
