My blog was always going to be a stream of consciousness agglomeration of random "stuff" but it does seem like it's evolving into something.

Re-reading my posts (just to ensure my voice is consistent and structure is maintained) I've noticed a few threads joining and weaving through some of my posts .

Still no overarching topic but it does seem to be "Very Pete" in my outlook. Never lose childlike wonder, remain open to new experiences and world views and take people as they are at face value.

I'm also noticing it's definitely picking up on my irreverent attitude as I seem to be perpetually amused by everything and everyone.

Quite refreshing to actually be enthusiastic about something for a change.

You would think that the combination of a Sunflower lanyard, a TFL "please offer me a seat" and a ****ing walking cane would.. you know... actually encourage people to offer me a seat.

Except what usual seems to happen. Someone on phone on seat in station waiting room, look up from phone ,looks at me, looks at cane, looks at lanyard, reads card, looks at me again.. then looks back down at the phone again.

Technology emu's.. if they bury their heads in their technology they can't see others so they therefore don't exist :(

It's a sad and sobering fact that although I feel I'm "in the twilight of my career" at 56 years old i probably still have AT LEAST 10 more years of work ahead of me.

But I'm promotion adverse. I'm an old guy in a programming job I no longer enjoy. It's less about code and more about data shuffling. Moving data from server to server and service to service. This whole SaaS innovation mean we now look after our clients data. So I'm doing more database admin and server admin than actual programming.

All the junior devs are doing any actual programming... and even then they're shifting the bulk of the load onto Claude, Codex and ChatGPT.

I don't think I can bear this for another decade plus.

So Fediverse, last week I was laid off by my employer, Elastic, as part of a wider reorg that made my position redundant. 7% of the global workforce was impacted, so I'm not alone in this 😢

I would appreciate boosts as I'm now looking for my next job. Preferably in community open source, but with the crazy market, a mortage and a baby I appreciate any lead.

I'm thinking about switching hosting providers for my website. The one I currently use is introducing a bunch of AI features, which feels inevitable, but surely there are some that aren't doing this? Right?

I'm very poor, so I need the cost to be low, and I'm not very techie, so I need it to be intuitive and easy to use. It's a pretty basic site with a static home page and a blog.

Anyone have ones they would particularly recommend?
