I like to explore unconventional methods and perspectives that help me to deal with every day life, process emotions, handle difficult situations and do my inner work.
I always had a bit of an interest in war strategy and military. One of the methods they use in the military to help soldiers regulate themselves are strict routines for example. So what is framed as disordered by medical professionals in autistic people, is actually a very efficient way of self regulation and functioning. We somewhat use military methods to cope with everyday life. Just saying.
Another aspect that is very important to reduce cortisol levels in soldiers is avoiding uncertainty. AuDHD people don't like that either, right? Waiting mode, unsolved problems are very difficult for us. That's not because there's something wrong with us, it is stressful and spiking cortisol levels for everyone, but most people are not aware of that to the extent we are. The NT world is so stressful for us by default and therefore we react more sensitive to that to the point we can develop CTPSD. We are the canaries in the coalmines here again.
There are other parallels between AuDHD preferences and military methods like needing clear rules and instructions. Having to read between the lines in a life threatening situations is obviously not a good method of communication.
We like to plan things in detail and develop strategies based on the analysis of precise information and not rough assumptions.
Then there is this aspect of taking care of our objects, not only using them, but wanting to understand how they work, being able to repair them ourselves if possible.
Night shift? No problem for the AuDHD night owl.
Being hyper focused in a dangerous situation so strongly that we can suppress our need to eat or drink, our abilities for problem solving and recognising details, the more I think about it, the longer the list becomes. Lists...
AuDHD people would make excellent soldiers if we weren't so sensitive to sensory input, injustice and nonsensical hierarchies.
A few weeks ago I found out that cleaning my bathroom is a perfect way for me to ground myself in difficult situations, where I have a lot of processing work to do. I did that today and I that inspired me to write this post.
