We have the windows open at night and are also privileged to have a back garden, and one that I have deliberately planted up for insects, bees and other wildlife.

I've noticed severely decreasing number of bees and insects in the garden.

And if I'd gone to sleep with the windows open, ooooooh, let's say pre year 2000, the room would be crawling with moths and insects the following morning. Today, just the odd moth.

This is not good news for any of us.

As I type this, another new recently-moved-in neighbour is in the process of ripping out all of their front garden to pave over for parking. Think there's only 4 or 5 houses left on this street with front garden borders, one of those is ours.

Sad times.

And now on another similar old town related note.

Every now and again there's an uproar in the town's local paper over kids trespassing in the ruin castle grounds, climbing up to the top of the round tower and walking around its parapet.

It's a rite of passage, those kids are bored out of their fucking trees, just as we were at their age. It's dangerous yes, but it's also exciting. My older siblings have done it, I've done it, all my mates have done it, their kids have done it and I'd say if their kids have had kids they're going to be doing it too.

For rite of passage also read; jumping off all the local bridges into the river.... jumping off the Abbey Bridge and the Wynch Bridge in Upper Teesdale were both one hell of a fucking rush I give you that! The regular one is with jumping off the Green Bridge.

American folk being baffled by the Scots putting traffic cones onto statue's heads.... it's a cultural tradition m'dears, embrace it.
