Arg. Iterating on how things look is such a trap! I kicked this project off doing as little lookdev as possible, with just some shapes on screen.

Last week I demoed it with poopier graphics, people liked it, and I got pages and pages of really helpful feedback notes.

All the notes were on gameplay. People barely mentioned gfx at all.

Since then all I've thought about was nicer glowy lines and cooler UI.

Bad brain. Stop it. Arg.

my game would be a labour of hate. A labour of spite and tortured compassion bristling with knives and swearing to haunt the ones who haunt.

Unfortunately nobody knows that "nology" is, but a lot of people like "technology", and the same people don't like "tech", so I'm sure they'll figure it out.

Technology itself isn't a problem.

The problem is that every piece of technology made by or for people who refer to it as "tech" needs to be balanced at a 4:6 ratio with the work of people who support "nology".

The three wise monkeys, except it's pizza boxes. My genius cat is sitting on top of the only one with pizza in it. She's poking her nose hopefully into the empty one in the middle. The third box has a plate on it, and on that plate sits a pristine slice of pizza, completely undisturbed.

To be fair there wasn't really a pristine slice on it. But there were a lot of interesting morsels and she hasn't figured out how to eat anything larger than kibble anyway.

I've given this a bit of thought and no, I'm not going to rename SUPER MEGA DEATH BALL to PLAY GOOD WIN FROG. Just like 90s fps games, metal music, and any other intense and dangerous-feeling media, this stuff only works if you don't break character. Nudge the player in the ribs and give them a big wink, and suddenly Quake is just Duke3D.

However.

I'm not letting go of the name PLAY GOOD WIN FROG. It's now in the Monster Bop design bible (delightfulthings.txt) and will show up as a minigame.

Anyway I'm gonna pin that toot with all the names just to make sure it poisons the well a little more.

I think the most alarming thing is how readily and reliably it makes things up, and the sources it chooses ('cos it's based on a web search apparently). I ran that query well over a hundred times and it correctly named me exactly once.

And yeah, okay, I rarely use my other name online so you won't find it in many places. But if you go to wikipedia dot etcetera slash Farbs IT'S IN THE FIRST FUCKEN SENTENCE.

Apparently Google ai hates leaving nicknames unqualified but doesn't care all that much about getting it right - just like real newspapers! Back when I was more interesting they had about a 50% success rate. Google on the other hand is somewhere around 2% and has outed me through this one query as a couple dozen different people including Andrew Shouldice, Adam Saltsman, increpare, a bunch of UK games journos, and a bunch of names I think it just made up.

I met him once. Might need to update my "most famous person I ever met" anecdote.

Runner up is Peter Molyneux, who smiled politely when I suggested the journos with me in the elevator might want to shush for a second, given the very scary NDAs we'd just signed and the identity of who'd just joined us on our ride down to the lobby.
