#roku just got bought by #fox, eliminating the one "easy" streaming platform that wasn't owned by Google, Amazon, or apple.

I've been annoyed with Roku for a while anyway; pervasive ads, obnoxiously unconfigurable views with unhelpful unwanted menu items, etc.

but this lit a fire.

and yeah, I've googled, and yeah, I've done enough embedded stuff i could hack together something that works even without a guide, but i want to hear from you, dear reader; i want to hear what works from real live queer nerds.

pet peeve: when local organizations, events, businesses etc forget that the internet is worldwide and stuff gets boosted to people all around the world both manually by humans and (on most platforms) algorithmically.

please please please if you are advertising for an in person thing, include location data with enough detail to disambiguate globally!!

it is so straightforward to include city/province/country SOMEWHERE on your flyer/bio/whatever

so you can distinguish between
London, UK and London, KY, USA.

and George Town, KY (capital of the Cayman Islands) and Georgetown, KY, USA (the sixth most populous city in Kentucky) (i didn't know that KY was the two letter country code for the Cayman islands until pointed out to me by @mirabilos , thanks!)

I'm not good enough at art to make this swiftly and I'm not gonna use genAI for it so how about we use prompt-based imagination; you all can see it in your brains instead:

a movie poster that looks like an old timey wanted poster with large, bold, vaguely piratical print at the top that says THE SALESMAN, with a sketch of the most stereotypical pirate face you can think (yes, he's got a pirate hat or a bandana, your choice, and an eye patch, maybe a parrot)

actually maybe the show could be a mockumentary about an entire crew of pirates that get hired to open a franchise, led by one utterly clueless business buffoon ala the guy from the office who does not understand why his freshly hired staff don't seem to know basic business things but he's eager to mentor and they manage to way exceed their sales quota (sales is cutthroat! and landing deals is pretty easy at sword point).

and there could be many posters, one for each crew member (and of course one for the clueless business guy, with a very hapless dopey grin on his face)

i have a new pitch for a sitcom: a pirate wants to retire from piracy and "go straight" so he gets what he thinks is a job repairing sails (something he's good at) but it turns out he just got a job as a Salesman.

while I'm at it, here are my podcast listening stats for this year - it has been a podcast heavy year, with lots of catching up on backlogs

and, related, my favorite podcast app: podcast addict! again, lots of features and while it does have to reach out to the Internet to do its job, it works well and i have been very happy with it.

also let me use this as an opportunity to plug my favorite music player app: Musicolet!!

it is by far the best music listening experience i have had - it is lightweight and efficient and *does not have Internet Permission*!! it does not (and CAN NOT) send data on you ... anywhere! additionally it has more features than you can shake a stick at, including, crucially, shuffle albums (ie play a random album), which is an unfortunately very rare feature to find in music players.

I've been using it for a few years and couldn't be happier.

unfortunately i believe it is Android only, but if you have Android, check it out!!

PSA:

as social media is inundated with #SpotifyWrapped posts i am begging you to at least consider alternative sources of music that do not treat artists so badly.

best would be buying the music from the artist (via #bandcamp or the artists website) but i understand the appeal of streaming platforms - if you must, try #tidal or one of the other services that pay artists significantly more.
