I am not offended if the person in front of me walks through the door that's open right next to them first.

I don't need you to let me go first.
It's not 'gentlemanly', it's benevolent sexism at very best, and it's not even 'kind' or helpful.

It's awkward. It's uncomfortable. Don't position yourself behind me. It makes the woman who's then forced in front of you *less* comfortable (usually).

If you feel offended by this suggestion, why?
Are you maybe not doing these things for women, but for you? Because you think it's 'chivalrous' or whatever BS?
Listen to women. It's not. Most people don't have the energy or don't feel safe enough to tell you and will just fawn their way past for the path of least resistance.

This AM a guy in a jacket (with a dodgy flaggy/police-y looking patch on it) and wearing some sort of lanyard got in the lift on my way out of the building.

He tried to make me walk past him at ground even though he was right next to the fucking door. I HATE THIS. SO MUCH.

I've said before and will again but men trying to make us walk past them in close quarters is NOT welcome (not just to me, maybe not for everyone, but)

I loudly said "No you go, you're in front of me!" and didn't move so he thankfully went.
But I don't need this nonsense. What if you get a bad'un? Definitely don't want to be squeezing past them.

And like Gower in this video, I lost my father to smoking-related cancers - he was 64.
I myself went through withdrawal symptoms when I moved to university because the whole house was always full of smoke. I was a second-hand mini-addict. I don't think he'd ever have chosen that for me, but he was so far gone he never put our safety above his habit.

When the indoor smoking ban came in in 2007 he even had an exception for his office at work - illegally - because he'd have quit if they didn't let him continue to smoke inside.

Tobacco is poison, don't let people reframe these laws as anything but progress against a huge harm.

A while back I saw someone claiming that the new Tobacco & Vapes legislation was 'ageist'.
It's literally the opposite.

Tobacco companies have always relied on people developing a habit young, to lock in an addicted customer base, all while killing at least half of all users. But it takes decades, and the science wasn't there at first - then they suppressed it - so cigarettes still exist. And now they've got the vaping market too, which was a mistake to allow to happen.

But work like this means fewer people starting to smoke in the first place. Saving lives. Access to deadly, highly addictive products from unethical profiteers isn't freedom. It's a crime against humanity. Past time we made more progress stopping it.
