Periodic reminder that teargas is an abortifacient.
I've been documenting the effects of teargas for five years by speaking to people directly impacted and exposed in the US.

There are many respiratory issues associated with teargas exposure, as you might imagine. What is lacking in research is the long lasting effects of these chemical weapons. There IS research that exists, especially documenting birth defects from other parts of the world, but there’s still a lot we don’t know.

Following 2020 in Portland, I've spoken to multiple people who can no longer have children after repeated and prolonged exposure. Including cis men.

At least 5 people in Portland in the past few months alone have had miscarriages, including 3 non protesters who live in the apartment building near the ICE facility.

One of the most common effects is what we call a Teargas Period. After teargas exposure, ovary havers frequently start a period within 1-3 days of exposure. I can speak to this personally as I am one of the people who deals with Teargas Periods every time l am exposed.

These effects are common from CS and OC gas.

Much of the munitions used by federal and state law enforcement contain heavy metals and lead salts known to cause cancer and birth defects. This is true for smoke grenades as well, not just teargas.

Another gas that was used on unarmed protesters by feds in 2020 (that has NOT been used yet recently, at least in Portland) was HC gas.

HC is not like other common teargas used (OC and CS) which are already bad enough. each time I've been otg when HC gas was used, well I'm not sure I even have the words to describe how bad it was.

People to my left and right either vomiting or completely losing consciousness. People all around ripping their full face gas masks off for reprise from the suffocation after the chemicals penetrated their masks and destroyed their filters. People's limp bodies being carried out by street medics all around me. There was no eye flushing, at least not in the immediate vicinity where there was still gas. Medics and people who were well enough to help others would just be trying to get as many people away and out of there as fast as possible.

This stuff is no joke. I know PPE isn’t accessible to everyone, but if you can protect yourself, even just a little bit, it’s crucial to do so. I promise raw dogging chemical warfare doesn’t make you look cool, if “looking silly” is the reason you’re not protecting yourself.

I am obviously no medical professional or scientist, but I think it’s really important this stuff is documented. In 2020, planned parenthood and some others had been doing research into this. I’m not really sure what happened with that. I know, especially now, clinics, physicians, and scientists are dealing with their own slew of issues and roadblocks, but I really hope someone comes back to this.

This summer, Indigenous land defenders in “Quebec” made the logging lobby eat shit—blockades, pressure, the whole nine. But the state will try again. The Atikamekw are digging in for winter with a permanent camp to watch their forests and stop illegal cuts. Cold’s coming fast. Kick in so they’ve got what they need to hold the line.
