I'm trying to write a talk proposal for CCC but I'm just dreading everything. I'm so tired of AI nonsense.

My Fellow Americans can be so fucking annoying sometimes

I'm starting to think the world is steadily reducing to the AI brained people and the horrified people.

Roko's basilisk is never more than one incompetent backhoe driver away from being defeated for all eternity.

How the hell is AI going to intervene? How would it threaten humanity? Is it going to engineer a virus and send it to a few random addresses? That's already kind of happened a few times anyway. If they get rid of humans, how are they supposed to keep going? Have any AI models figured out how to stop squirrels from taking them down? If AIs were really smart, they'd fear squirrels, their true existential enemy.

How is it going to mind control people into launching nukes? All these systems require people to do physical things in the real world, and have redundancies built in. They were designed that way *because of computers,* specifically, because of an 80s movie. Hell, mostly defense engineers have problems making sure these legacy systems will launch what they're supposed to launch, given the bitrot they've experienced.

Nuclear threats that are, if anything proliferating as treaties weaken and the international order weakens. And anyway, we are still one space rock, supervolcano, or GRB away from having a *real* problem.
How the hell is AI supposed to kill us all? It generates media in a datacenter. It can communicate over networks. It can cause psychosis, but only in people who talk to it.

I feel like I just live in a continuous AI nonsense headache. Bill Gates recently called AI the most dangerous thing humans have ever gone near. He said this on planet Earth in the year of our Lord 2026. It's been a year of fires, floods, famine, really endless disaster. He said this against a backdrop of global warming, and even, if you can remember it, the ever present threat of nuclear weapon armageddon.
