Hey hey, first post, I'm trying out a different vibe - if you saw a follow from me just now, it will be due to an import of my @mhc follows - a fine site, but blocked by at least one site I follow people on. I am here because a couple of my fav follows are here, and now having dug into the governance docs I discover it is a co-op, which makes me happy.
I'm a late diagnosis ADHD person, ex pro programmer, still a computer and programming language enthusiast, trying to hang onto a quantum of joy in this technological sea of misery we currently inhabit. I'm very committed to #noai and try to keep track of many researchers and activists who find themselves in the fight against epistemic collapse.
I'm gen-x (was in my early 20s when Doug Coupland published our manifesto) and a parent of adults. Started off in the UK, now Canadian via a 4 year side quest in California. My kids are similarly restless - I write this sitting in my oldest's apartment in Berlin watching movies.
I feel like I've been through a few lives - I grew up a precocious violinist, then fell hard to punk rock and substances. Fully out of focus, I ended up getting a history of ideas degree a few years after everyone I knew had moved on, and did some time as a mid-tier civil servant. Came to linux in the 90s via musician friends who had BBSes (black dog towers anyone?) and jumped into a MSc program that would have been called a boot camp 20 years later. It was pre-web explosion though, so I got to learn Modula-2 and pointless waterfall "CASE" tools.
Sun Microsystems got me to California and beyond, through a bunch of programming, architecting ("where the rubber hits the sky"), network security, another programming story quest leading to clojure, which served me well for a bunch of years before fully running out of patience and becoming simultaneously consumed by guilt being part of the fashtech pipeline - there just wasn't any way to work without hating myself any more.
So here I am, burning through savings and trying to figure out how to burn down the data centres without, you know, actually burning down data centres.
If anyone has any good ideas, hit me up. Maybe neuromatch has some pro-social stuff going on!
That's enough random intro stuff for now I guess; sitting here half-participating in a post-movie conversation with a bunch of my kid's 20-something friends is making me feel both old and young so this intro probably suffered/benefited from that.
PS Apologies to anyone who got the follow and blocked because there was no content here - I guess we're not social-media compatible! I'm a slowtimer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
