"More than six hours before the coordinated release, Chainguard unilaterally broke the embargo and published built images containing the fix. Like other distributors, Chainguard had received the patch in advance so its users could update the moment the vulnerabilities were disclosed. Any attacker could now study the fix in binary form while every other PHP user was still waiting for the release. This disregarded weeks of work by many parties toward a coordinated disclosure."

Fucking assholes.

Too busy with other stuff to do much buying or recommending of any music for #BandcampFriday this time, so I'm going to rehash an old one. Mainly because I'm still listening to a lot of it, months later.

New single from Pillow Queens:

A #BandcampFriday day-after observation: some albums have a "mix and match" approach to high-def files.
The CD standard (16/44.1) can sit next to higher definition audio (like 24/96 or above) among tracks in the same album release.
That's only apparent if the download is in a lossless format. Most people happily get through life unaware of that level of technical detail: if it's in stereo and it doesn't skip, it's fine.
It's generally not a problem on modern devices: they can convert if needed.

This Friday is another #BandcampFriday which means that the music download platform takes a 0% cut of all sales for 24 hours.

I hope to post a thread of recommended buys this time, on or before the day itself.

Note to buyers in Ireland and the UK:
Your Bandcamp purchases count towards the national sales charts, but ONLY AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD THEM.

Also, big shout-out to Toronto's ARTOFFACT RECORDS (still not on Fedi) whose email announcements will once again refer to the day as "Bandcamp Day".

These visuals are created live, with the operator mixing video sources and delays using knobs and hand and foot switches, and moving a custom camera rig by hand, all while watching the results on screen.
That's full-body feedback!

Analogue Optical Fractal Generator - now in 4K. Previously made in lower resolutions.

Dave Blair said it couldn't be done in 4K, because there wasn't any pure analogue video control hardware capable of 4K. Until someone built one for this project.

No software.
No computer.
No algorithm.

Just precision optics and smooth hand-controlled camera motion.

Someone in @signalapp is having fun on the Play Store.
From a recent update's description:

"The new media editor also supports removing the audio track from a video before you send it. If the pastoral slow-panorama footage from your vacation to Scotland was partially ruined by the sound of wandering sheep, with just one tap your movie can become the silence of the lambs"

Some news outlets are suggesting colanders, along with other homebrew hacks, for those who couldn't buy safe eclipse glasses in time.

If you're going to use a colander (or any pinhole device) be sure to look at the projected sun on the ground, not directly through the hole.

Tonight's 21:15 #TOTP programme from 1988 includes All About Eve with "Martha's Harbour".

This is the infamous appearance where Julianne Regan and Tim Bricheno couldn't hear the backing track, and sat there doing nothing.

Feeling overwhelmed, might delete later.

Kyiv Type Foundry have digitised six typefaces from historical Kyiv subway station signage. Their new 'Metro Fonts' are free for Ukrainians to use, donation-based for the rest of the world. Donations will be given to those in need.

Skoda developed (with the University of Salford) an all-mechanical bicycle bell that bypasses active noise cancellation (ANC) in headphones.
https://www.skoda-storyboard.com/en/skoda-world/skoda-duobell-a-bicycle-bell-that-outsmarts-even-smart-headphones/
It's tuned to 750hz, which is a "blind spot" in most ANC headphone processing.
There is also a resonator for a higher frequency, and the hammer produces irregular strikes, confusing the ANC further, and making pedestrians look behind them faster.

Happy 303 Day!

There is a myth that when Roland released the TB-303 in 1981, they had no idea that some of the tone controls would later be used (by tweaking knobs while the sequencer was running) to make an 'Acid' sound.

A TB-303 advert from 1982 refers to these tone controls, and says: "to be varied at pleasure".

"At Pleasure".
THEY KNEW!
