Lots of wittering on UK TV news programmes about Dangers of AI being forefront at the UN, etc. , and “please, regulate us” appeals from Sam Altmann et al. FFS, if they (techbros) really think their AI platforms are dangerous, they could just turn them off. They don't, of course, so it's just attention seeking, and avoidance of responsibility for their own creations. So I'm a bit sorry to add to the attention seeking part. Night night!
An extremely fine Ribwort plantain on Wednesday
Bit of a rubbish phone shot, but this is Shaggy Soldier, on the pavement underneath the bike rack in town.
As it has been so dry, I was a bit fearful that Autumn Lady's-tresses would not be found this year. On one site I know well nearby none were to be found a week ago, the grass all brown and tangled with sweet-briars. But yesterday, a slightly misty/damp day, a few were to be found at another spot in the Purbeck Hills, within feet of the roadside gate and a busy public footpath. This plant was only about 6 cm high, which is fairly typical. The last UK native orchid species to flower, their appearance always marks a major junction in many a naturalists' year.
Down by the shore: Sea Campion and Knot-grass
One specially for @petersketch : "Obligatory Fleabane", a widely-occurring species
Enchanter's nightshade
Not a flower as such, but a rather nice Robin's Pincushion, a feathery gall caused by the reaction of its Rose host (Sweet Briar, in this case, I think) to the larvae of a gall wasp.
Flowering today near Worth Matravers: Restharrow and Teasels
A little Centaury on Hartland Way, an old medieval road - now just a track - across Hartland Moor, #Dorset
Broad-leaved Willowherb (probably ... took some work with a key) and Yellow Wood-Sorrel
Dunscombe Bottom, a lowland chalk hillside nature reserve (Wiltshire Wildlife Trust) is bursting with wildflowers now. Common Spotted-orchids everywhere (no photo here). Standouts for me this week were Dropwort, a few Chalk Fragrant-orchids, and Fairy Flax.
This one looks like a crowd of figures in big white gowns and hoods, with pink smiley emoji faces! 🤩 👻
One of the Heath Spotted-orchids had *very* strong, deep-coloured rings. Another was a pure white (with a spider taking interest)
Bonus extras on Ballard Down were our first Pyramidal Orchid (just the one) and first Bee Orchids of the year (several). All in all, a grand day out!

Ivy Broomrape (Orobanche Hederae) in Swanage on Friday, and Common Broomrape (Orobanche Minor), growing on clover, on Ballard Down today. Hederae has stigma lobes that are partly united, and yellow; the stigma lobes on Minor are pink.
Round-leaved sundew and Oblong-leaved sundew; marshy bit of heath near Slepe, Dorset on Thursday. OK so these aren't the *flowers* of sundew, which aren't out yet, but ...
The "Oblong-leaved" ones aren't actually oblong, but they aren't round.
Broad bean flowers
Off out for dinner this evening, so here's posting a bit early for #WildflowerHour
From earlier this week, in Paris, Wall Lettuce (Lactuca muralis), and in Oxford this afternoon, Greater Celandine growing out of a wall.
