Daft thing that I think Fedi will like: an internet controlled bubble machine in a Florida backyard. It's got a webcam.
Apparently been going since 2001.

random thought:

• you should have forums for your hobby / subculture / open source thing / etc., that are not discord, and that are openly accessible in HTML online. you should try to make those appear on google and be like the place to discuss the thing, if that's at all doable.

• many online subcultures used to have a politeness norm of "don't ask questions without first googling it". this rule is obsolete. googling it doesn't work anymore. stackexchange is dead. it is very difficult already to find reliable information. you need to make it as easy and inviting as possible for curious people and newcomers to get used to asking human beings about the thing. this means tolerating common questions rather than replying to them like "read the FAQ/TFM/search the forum" etc.

• in fact, actively establish spaces specifically meant for people who are too intimidated to ask questions. in a reddit-type forum, do "weekly quick q&a thread—all questions welcome" kinda thing (it's less intimidating to post a brief comment than making a question post). do "weekly casual chat thread" and "beginner's corner" and "off-topic fridays" and stuff like that, too.

• and on the converse, actively discourage people from posting chatbot answers, through both forum rules and fostering forum culture. don't be aggressive about it but also don't be lenient.

Does anyone have advice or experience with ethical mobile phones?
Fairphone does not seem to be supported in AUS and my phone is nearly 7 years old, so it might be an idea to know what I want to replace it with, when it goes.
I will not buy anything from American companies and am loath to buy Samsung.

Boosts appreciated and thanks if you boosted it!

18th of Owltober!
'Ururangi' the Ruru / Morepork (a species of owl native to New Zealand) was taken to Wairarapa Wild Bird Rescue in Masterton, reportedly "after narrowly escaping becoming a cat's snack." Want to donate to WWBR? https://ngahuia.org/#donate Source: https://fb.com/1331566015855271 #owlsintowels 💛🦉

A few evenings I found this toad standing guard at my front door or walkway. Maybe I should hang up a tiny “Beware of Toad” sign on the door to warn off intruders. #toad #animals #nature #naturephotography

📰 Solar Panels Save Cranberry Bogs

🌎 Massachusetts: Long‑idle cranberry bogs are producing again thanks to agrivoltaics that make the economics work.

☀️ Panels raised high above the vines let farmers keep cultivating while earning steady land‑lease income, a dual‑revenue model that finally makes cranberry farming here viable again.

🤝 An example of how clean energy can help farmers regain stability instead of walking away from land they couldn’t afford to farm.

Taking an interest in and learning about something is a form of resistance.

If something is interesting to you, look into it, practice it, discuss it with others.

Hey folks - the reports are getting dealt with.

We are going through another wave of compromised accounts (not us, specifically, but fediverse-wide) where other data breaches have exposed emails&passwords that people have also used for Fediverse accounts which are now compromised, sometimes after years of inactivity.

This is your periodic reminder to never reuse passwords, and ideally use a password generator/locker + some sort of 2-factor authentication.

Please enjoy this series of photos entitled "Michele Got Too Excited Because Her Pear Still Had a Leaf Still Lives"

Anyone know of a LGBTQ friendly ham radio organization in Massachusetts? I, uh, might need that info.

No photo from me because I’m the fucking Ozymandias Watchmen of voting. Vote-by-mail for life!
