i'm listening to episode 189 of lateral and in the intro they discuss the idea of an "aesthetist" as opposed to an anaesthetist. tom mentions that "an" means without and "aesthe" comes from "sensation". they spend some time talking about this then move on without making the joke i immediately thought of: surely aesthetist is synonymous with sensationalist!

What a weird, sad way to spend an evening: discovering that someone who most likely used to be dishonest about involvement of GenAI in their digital art process is now shipping one software project after another with the help of totally-ethical LLMs. Sigh.

it’s real weird to be in software and call yourself an engineer and not notice any of this, but that’s our field unfortunately

I’ve got very little patience for software engineering “professionals” coming into this thread to pretend that LLMs are good at finding bugs, as if we’re not in the same profession and I haven’t been forced to use the fucking things

all research not funded directly by AI corporations shows they’re fucking terrible at finding bugs and introduce many more than they fix, and that’s in line with personal experience

the machine will constantly gaslight you into thinking your code is riddled with bugs and it’s fixing them, and by pure luck it might even be right! you’re very likely to remember the times it’s right more than the times it absolutely fucks it

it also really, really wants your code to be a formless blob, and the thing’s output will get hilariously manipulative if you push back on it at all, as you would with a person reviewing your code. and people using an LLM to review your code will get real shitty with you too, cause the machine said you’re wrong.

ok, silly concept: Uxn programs have a chirality, identified by which of the two stacks is used for return addresses and which is used for values. as long as there is no self-modifying code to the degree that opcodes are changed at runtime, i *think* you can statically transpose a program from one chirality to the other, just find every opcode (with the exception of BRK, JCI, JMI, JSI, and avoiding immediates) and flip 0x40... almost. JCI only reads from WST. :(
